1 Bei besonderen baulichen Voraussetzungen gilt es mitunter, unkonventionelle Wege
zu beschreiten! Das trifft auch auf den neuen Sporthallenbau des Ulmer Kepler- und
Humboldt-Gymnasiums zu. Denn um die fehlenden Kapazitäten zu decken, waren gleich
drei neue Turnhallen vonnöten – aufgrund der innerstädtischen Struktur stand für den
Neubau aller dings nur ein r elativ k leines Bauf eld zur Verfügung. Zudem sollte das
Gebäude als Baustein des Stadtentwicklungsprojekts „Zukunftsprojekt Innenstadt 2020“
repräsentative Wirkung haben. Daher legte die Stadt im ausg eschriebenen Wettbewerb
fest, dass die dr ei Einzelsporthallen übereinandergestapelt werden sollten. Umg esetzt
wurde die in Ulm einmali ge Lösung schließlich durch das Stuttgarter Architekturbüro
h4a, das mit seinem Entwurf die solitäre Stellung des Neubaus überzeugend inszeniert:
Um das gesamte Gebäude zieht sich eine vorhangartige, vertikal gegliederte Fassaden -
gestaltung aus ineinander verdrehten weißen Aluminiumlamellen. Je nach Nutzung der
Räume ist die Fassade massiv und geschlossen bis leicht und offen ausgeführt. So entste-
hen gezielte Einblicke ins Innere, die die Funktion des Gebäudes transparent machen.
Verbunden werden die dr ei Sporthallen, von denen die unter ste zur Hälfte unter der
Erde liegt, so wie die da zugehörigen Neb enräume durch den g eschossübergreifenden
Luftraum der Eingangshalle, der von einer skulpturalen Treppe ausgefüllt wird. vc

have to be found! This is also true for the new sports-hall building of the Kepler- and
Humboldt-Gymnasium in Ulm. In or der to provide the mis sing capacity, no les s than
three new gym halls were needed. Yet, due to the inner-city structure, there was only a
relatively small construction site available for the new building. In addition, as a com-
ponent of the “Zukunftsprojekt Innenstadt 2020” urban development project, the build-
ing was also to ha ve a r epresentative impact. That was why the c ity specified in the
competition that was held that the three individual sports halls were to be stacked on
top of each other. The solution unique in Ulm was ultimately implemented b y the
Stuttgart h4a architectural office with their design which convincingly stages the solitary
position of the new building: A curtain-like, vertically structured façade design of twist-
ed, white aluminium slats surrounds the whole building. Depending on how the rooms
are used, the façade is constructed to look solid and closed or light and open. The three
sports halls, as well as the necessary adjoining rooms, are linked by the open space of
