Schlicht und elegant zugleich: die Bäder im Dachgeschoss • Both plain and elegant: bathrooms in the attic

Grundriss Erdgeschoss: Veranstaltungsräume • Ground floor plan:Event rooms

Der repräsentative Haupteingang in neuem Glanz • The prestigious main entrance shines in new splendour

it had been inscribed in the house from the very beginning. At first glance, nothing has
changed in the building’s geometry; the base zone, which has been opened up by enlar-
ging the windows, is not noticeable at first. The measure has turned the basement into
a garden level, which is now used as a flexible exhibition space. Inside, the architects
headed by Dea Ecker and Robert Piotrowski found a smorgasbord of different furnishings, Grundriss Obergeschoss: Büroräume der Stiftung • Upper floor plan: Offices of the Foundation
interior details and accessories. The overall character was sedate but cluttered. The spa-
cious entrance hall with a grand stairway was dominated by dark wood, a baroque fire-
place and gold-patterned wallpaper. The dark brown banister and the wooden coffered
ceiling were painted in light hues; now the high room even tolerates the golden painted
coffers on the ceiling. The heavy fireplace has been replaced with a marble-framed, yet
plain version, and the excessive furniture made way for elegant seating in the style of the
Wiener Werkstätte of the 1920s. The garden side required a major intervention: creating
the axial symmetry of the three garden rooms brings about a coherent room continuum,
which can also be separated by means of yellow-green curtains. The rooms have all been
finished with light panelling, stucco applications and brightly painted ceilings. The overall
impression is that of an Art Deco-inspired ambience.

Understated elegance dominates the upper floors

Despite the high-quality furnishings, the first floor is a little more prosaic, as it houses
the foundation’s offices. Four rooms for scholarship holders have been created on top
floor, and a kitchen has been added for future users. Here, too, everything is bright, the
bathrooms are simple yet elegant with white Bauhaus tiles and tasteful washbasins. Grundriss Dachgeschoss: Räume für Stipendiaten • Attic floor plan: Rooms for Scholarship holders
