taab Architekten sahen sich mit der Aufgabe konfron-
tiert, die Liebfrauenkirche in eine Grabeskirche mit
S
circa 4000 Urnengräbern umzuwidmen. Sowohl die Frage
nach dem angemessenen Ort für das Ritual einer Urnen -
bestattung als auch der Umgang mit dem bestehenden
Kirchenraum, einer dreischiffigen neugotischen Stufen hal -
le, standen dabei im Vordergrund der Über legun gen. Mit
dem Vor schlag, sämtliche Urnengräber flächig auf dem
Kirchen boden anzuordnen, gelang eine einfache Antwort
auf diese beiden Aspekte. In der friedhofsähnlichen Anord -
nung des Urnenfeldes wurde eine Analogie zu der traditio-
nellen Erdbestattung gefunden. Durch die bodenbezogene
Position des Urnengrabes kommt das Ritual dem der
Erdbestattung nahe, bei der durch die Übergabe des Leich -
nams an die Erde der Kreislauf von Leben und Tod versinn-
bildlicht wird. Andererseits bleibt bei dieser nur circa 80
Zentimeter hohen Installation der bestehende Kirchen -
raum die räumlich und atmosphärisch wirksame Domi -
nan te. Die Mate rialisierung der Urnen po deste wurde ein-
heitlich in Baubronze ausgeführt. Durch dieses leicht kor-
rodierende Material wird die Erdbezogen heit unterstützt
und verschiedene Aus füh rungen der Ur nen behälter ermög-
lichen individuelle Bestückungen des Urnengrabes.

with the task of turning the Liebfrauenkirch into a

burial church with approximately 4,000 urn graves.
The issue of an appropriate setting for the ritual of a
urn burial as well as how to deal with the existing
church, a three-aisled neo-Gothic stepped hall, were in
the foreground of the discussions. With the proposition
of arranging all the urn graves flat on the church floor,
a simple solution for both these aspects was reached.
In the cemetery-like arrangement of the urn area, an
analogy to the traditional earth burial was found.
Thanks to the earth-related location of the urn grave,
the ritual resembles that of the earth burial where the
surrendering of the corpse to the earth symbolizes the
cycle of life and death. With this only 80 centimetres
high installation, however, the existing church room
continues to effectively dominate the space and the
atmosphere. The urn platforms were uniformly made of
architectural bronze. Due to this easily corroding mate-
rial, the earth-relationship is supported and various
versions of the urn containers make it possible to indi-
vidually design the urn graves.
