bereich: Im Herzen der beiden Patios befinden sich flache Wasserbecken. Diese Reflecting
Pools werden bewusst nicht mit Licht inszeniert, damit sie die Architektur und die Be -
grünung sowie das umgebende Licht lebendig reflektieren. Im südlichen Patio friedet eine
Hecke das Wasserbecken ein. Sie wird mittels Erdspießleuchten nachts sanft erhellt. Im
nördlichen Patio hingegen werden die Wandabschnitte der angrenzenden Fassaden durch
Bodeneinbauleuchten eingeblendet. Die Bäume des Innenhofs zeichnen sich als
Silhouetten gegen die hellen Flächen ab und sind so auch nachts auf ihre Weise präsent.
Flanieren unter freiem Himmel in stimmungsvoller Atmosphäre: Generell wird den
Außenbereichen wenig Nachtbeleuchtung hinzugefügt, denn die ländliche Lage von Hotel
und Spa erzeugt eine hohe Sensibilität für Lichtverschmutzung. In erster Linie dringt sanf-
tes Licht durch Gebäude- und Gelände öffnungen von unten.

Das künstliche Licht ist auf den Ort und die Architektur abgestimmt

die ge genüber bewährten Halogenleuchtmitteln nichts an Wärme und Brillanz vermissen
lässt. Die funktionalen Anforderungen und gewünschten Stimmungen konnten in allen
Räumen realisiert werden. In den Spa-Räumen werden die Lichtszenarien und -Niveaus
zusätzlich über Tageslichtsensoren und eine astronomische Zeitschaltuhr abgerufen. Dies
führt die Räume subtil von der Tages- in die Abendstimmung und trägt zu einem sorgsa-
men Um gang mit Energie und Ressourcen bei.

I nto the historic building fabric of the former Premonstratensian monastery, 27 hotel
rooms and three suites, a wine bar with a wine cellar, a lounge with an open fire-
place, conference- and event rooms as well as a fitness- and yoga section were added.
Through an extension building, the so-called Caballerizas (horse stables), the hotel
guest reaches the new, underground spa zone. The clients’ and planners’ high quality-

resulting uniform spatial structure. For us as lighting designers, the architecture of the
old monastery walls with only sparsely incident daylight presented a special challenge.
The lighting design was to put the representative building with its architectural comple-
xity in the limelight in an atmospheric way yet appropriate for its historic context.

Each hotel area was given an individual lighting solution

Functional and atmospheric light in the reception and the hallways: The lighting in the
long, monastic hallways and the cloister is based on a consistent principle. Wall lumi-
naires supplying both direct and indirect light run along the elongated rooms, adding
rhythm and illuminating the vaults of the cloister as well as the bright stone floors. A
mesh of fine brass wire attached to the undersides of the luminaires gives the light a
warm tone and, at the same time, conceals the illuminant. The wall luminaires are com-
plemented by standard lamps whose shades each consist of four fanned-out bronze
panels. Historic premises shine in a new light: The former chapter hall opens to the
cloister and serves as a lounge for the visitors. Dimmable, decorative standard- and

table lamps with textile shades create zones of light with a suitably intimate atmosphe-
re. The former monastery church offers space for events. The lighting system is able to
flexibly react to the various uses with individually controllable lighting scenarios. The
cross vaults – up to about twelve metres in height – are gently illuminated from the capi-
tals by surface-mounted directional spotlights with dimmable LEDs. Thus well-balanced
luminance is produced in the space while the visitors are able to experience the room
height. The altar section, the baptismal font and the apses are illuminated with spot-
lights from the same positions and add accents. The anti-glare tubes of the indirectly
shining and the honeycomb grids of the directly shining spotlights prevent any glare
effect. Dining in the former refectory: Today, the restaurant is located where formerly the
monks used to dine. While conserving the original proportions and structures of the
room, the space was equipped according to what the new use requires. Bronze stan-
dard lamps put along the long sides and mediate between the level of the guests and
the about ten metres high cross vaults. They directly as well as indirectly illuminate the
old stone walls and the vault surfaces with a warm light. With their lively, warm light,
