A ls großes industrielles und kulturelles Zentrum Südrusslands ist Rostow am Don
der wichtigste Handels- und Verkehrsknotenpunkt der Region. Neben dem be-
deutenden Binnenhafen gilt vor allem der internationale Flughafen als absolut un-
verzichtbar für die lokale Wirtschaft, weshalb die Stadt und die gleichnamige Region
auch gerne als das „Tor zum Kaukasus“ betitelt werden. Eine Bezeichnung, die nicht
nur auf die herausragende Infrastruktur, sondern auch auf die einzigartige Land-
schaft anspielt, die vom namensgebenden Fluss Don sowie dem nahen Asowschen
Meer geprägt ist. Von dieser eindrucksvollen Kulisse ließen sich auch Vox Architects
beim Design für die Priority Pass Lounge des Flughafens inspirieren. Analog zum fast
endlosen Horizont, der in der Ferne mit dem Don zu verschmelzen scheint, verläuft
an der Wand der Lounge etwa auf Augenhöhe eine Metallschiene, die die Wandflä-
chen in zwei Abschnitte unterteilt. Dank einer in der Schiene versteckten Lichtquelle
wird der obere Wandbereich angestrahlt. Dies ermöglicht einen fließenden Übergang
zur fehlenden Decke hin, was der erleuchteten Wandfläche einen leichten, fast
schwebenden Eindruck verleiht. Transparente, in Form, Farbe und Funktion vari-
iende Polycarbonattrennwände und mehrere raumfüllende, runde Spiegel erzeugen
zusätzlich ein interessantes, farbenfrohes und etwas unwirkliches Raumgefühl. jn

A s a major industrial and cultural centre of Southern Russia, Rostov on Don is
the most essential hub for trade and traffic in the region. Besides the important
inland port, above all the international airport is seen as absolutely indispensable
for the local economy. This is why the city and the region of the same name are also
fondly called the “Gateway to the Caucasus”. A title which not only refers to the ex-
cellent infrastructure but also to the unique scenery which is characterized by the Der zentrale blaue Spiegel soll an eine Sonne erinnern. • The central blue mirror is to remind of a sun.
name-giving river Don as well as the nearby Sea of Asov. For the design of the air-
port’s Priority Pass Lounge, Vox Architects were also inspired by this impressive back-
drop. Analogous to the almost endless horizon which appears to merge with the Don Die Polycarbonattrennwände sind mit Metallrahmen gefasst. • The polycarbonate partitions have metal frames.
in the distance, a metal rail runs along the wall of the lounge at about eye level and
divides the wall areas into two sections. The upper part of the wall is illuminated by
a light source concealed in the rail. This allows a fluent transition to the missing cei-
ling which gives the illuminated wall areas a light-weight, almost floating appea-
rance. Transparent polycarbonate partitions varying as to form, colour and function
and several extensive circular mirrors additionally produce an interesting, colourful
and somewhat unreal spatial feeling.
