A n die frühere Nutzung des Areals erinnert heute nur noch der Name: Toreo! 1947
eröffnete hier, am Westrand von Mexiko-Stadt, die damals mo derns te Stier kampf -
arena des Landes – die Toreo de Cuatro Caminos, ein kreisrunder Betontrog von fast 150
Metern Durchmesser, der mehrere Zehntausend Zuschauer beherbergen konn te. Seit den
späten 1960er-Jahren überwölbte eine riesige, 60 Meter hoch in den Him mel ragende
Stahlkuppel das Beton rund und bildete ein weithin sichtbares Wahr zeichen. Seither
lösten immer häufiger Rockkonzerte, politische Kundgebungen und vor allem Wrest ling -
wettkämpfe die blutigen Stierhatzen ab. 2006 war aber auch damit Schluss! Das Gelän -
de wechselte den Besitzer und die Toreo de Cuatro Caminos fiel 2008 der Abriss birne
zum Opfer. Zugleich wurde das renommierte Architektur büro Sordo Madaleno mit der
Neu gestaltung des fast 50.000 Quadratmeter großen Areals beauftragt. Über sechs Tief -
garagengeschossen konzipierten die Architekten drei Büro hochhäuser, einen Hotel turm
mit 220 Zimmern sowie eine viergeschossige Shop pingmall. Sie liegt zwischen den Hoch -
häusern und wird von einer riesigen Stahl-Glas-Konstruktion, die sich zwischen den
Hochbau ten aufspannt, überdacht. Das oberste Geschoss der Mall verwandelten die
Architekten in eine Indoor-Parklandschaft aus Bäumen und metallenen Baum stützen. In
diese Landschaft sind die eigentlichen Mall-Straßen wie Canyons eingeschnitten.

O nly the name reminds of the former use of the area: Toreo! In 1947, the most
modern bullring in the country at the time was opened on the western outskirts
of Mexico City – Toreo de Cuatro Caminos, a circular concrete trough with a diameter
of almost 150 metres, which was large enough to welcome tens of thousands of
spectators. Since the late 1960s, a huge 60-metre high steel dome had vaulted over
the concrete circle and formed a landmark visible from afar. Since then, rock concerts,
political rallies, and especially wrestling matches had increasingly replaced the bloo-
dy bullfights. But 2006 also brought the end of that! The site changed hands, and
Toreo de Cuatro Caminos fell victim to the wrecking ball in 2008. At the same time,
the renowned architectural firm Sordo Madelano was commissioned to redesign the
almost 50,000-square-metre site. On top of six underground parking levels, the archi-
tects designed three office towers, a tall hotel building with 220 rooms and a four-
storey shopping mall. It is located between the high-rises and is covered by a huge
steel and glass construction stretching between the tower blocks. The architects trans-
formed the top floor of the mall into an indoor park landscape with trees and metal
tree supports. The actual mall paths are cut into this landscape like canyons.
