2 Bis vor wenigen Jahren war das Zentrum der 37.000-Einwohner-Stadt Kamp-Lintfort
im Ruhrgebiet von den „Drei Weißen Riesen“ geprägt: Anfang der 1970er-Jahre als
Antwort auf das rasche Bevölkerungswachstum erbaut, entwickelten sich die 16-ge -
schossigen Wohnhochhäuser schließlich mit bis zu 95 Prozent Leerstand zum Sorgen -
kind der Stadt. Erst 2010 konnte das letzte Hochhaus abgerissen werden, woraufhin ein
neues Einkaufszentrum auf dem Baufeld errichtet wurde. Nicht weit davon entfernt eröff -
nete 2014 eine Dependance der Hochschule Rhein-Waal. Im Zuge dessen entstand neben
dem Einkaufszentrum ein Appartementhaus mit insgesamt 18 Einheiten von Einzimmer -
wohnungen bis hin zur komfortablen Loftwohnung. Mit dieser Mischung sollen sowohl
Studenten als auch kleine Familien und berufstätige Personen mit Zweitwohnsitz in
Kamp-Lintfort angesprochen werden. Von außen verleiht eine Verkleidung aus bor-
deauxroten Aluminiumplatten den Fassaden und dem Mansarddach ein einheitliches
Erscheinungsbild. Auch im Inneren wurde ein Farbkonzept mit Wiedererkennungswert
umgesetzt: Jeder Wohneinheit ist eine Farbe zugeordnet, die sich jeweils in den Folie-
rungen der Briefkästen und an den Seiten der Türrahmen wiederfinden. Sie setzen bunte
Ak zente in den ansonsten schlicht gehaltenen Oberflächen der Wände aus Sichtbeton
und des Bodenbelags aus hellgrauen Fliesen. In den Wohnungen selbst taucht hingegen

2 Until a few years ago, the centre of the city of Kamp-Lintfort in the Ruhr region with
37,000 inhabitants was characterized by the “Three white Giants”: Constructed at the
beginning of the 1970s as an answer to the rapid population growth, the 16-storey resi-
dential high-rises ended up turning into the city’s “problem child” with vacancy rates of
up to 95 percent. Not until 2010 was it possible to tear down the last high-rise building
whereupon a new shopping centre was constructed on the site. Not far from it, in 2014
a branch of Hochschule Rhein-Waal was opened. In the process, next to the shopping
centre an apartment house was constructed with a total of 18 units from one-room apart-
ments to comfortable lofts. This mixture is to appeal to students as well as small families
and professionals as a secondary residence in Kamp-Lintfort. From the outside, a
cladding of burgundy-red aluminium plates gives the façades and the mansard roof a
consistent appearance. Inside as well, a colour concept with recognition value was imple-
mented: A specific colour is assigned to each residential unit and is found again in the
fronts of the letter boxes and on the sides of the door frames. This adds colourful accents
to the otherwise unobtrusively designed surfaces of the walls of exposed concrete and
the floor covering of light-grey tiles. In the apartments themselves, on the other hand, the
burgundy red of the façade is found again in the linoleum floor covering and the tiles.
