1 Rund 30.000 Studenten zählt die McGill University in der kanadischen Millionenstadt
Montreal. Wer von ihnen einen Platz in der Edison Residence ergattert, kann sich
nicht nur aufgrund der Nähe zum innerstädtischen Campus glücklich schätzen: Er be -
wohnt zugleich ein inspirierendes Umfeld, das die Geschichte des Ortes durch modernste
Technologien erlebbar macht. Zur Straße hin besteht die Fassade des Appartementhauses
aus Betonpaneelen, in die mittels eines innovativen Herstellungsverfahrens Bilder eingra -
viert wurden. Diese stammen aus dem Film „Montreal Fire Department on Runners“, der
Dokumentation über ein Feuer, das 1901 in der Nähe ausgebrochen war. Mit der Einbet -
tung in den historischen Kontext wird zugleich ein großer amerikanischer Erfinder geehrt:
Produziert wurde der Film nämlich im Studio von Thomas Edison, der mit seinen Erfin -
dungen als Begründer der Filmindustrie gilt – und zudem Namensgeber des Gebäudes
ist. Durch vertikale Rillen wurden die Bilder in den Betonelementen abgebildet. Die Rillen
erzeugen ein Spiel aus Licht und Schatten, dessen Wahrnehmung sich je nach Wetter,
Entfernung und Blickwinkel verändert. Funktional ist das Gebäude zweigeteilt: Hinter
dem Fronthaus, in dem sich die gemeinschaftlichen Bereiche wie Küche, Lounge, Wohn -
zimmer und Bäder befinden, erstreckt sich ein langer Riegel mit 30 Studentenzimmern.
Sie sind modular konzipiert: Gegenüber dem raumhohen Einbauschrank, der das Bett an Kommunikativ geht es auch beim Kochen und Essen zu. • Cooking and eating also promotes communication.

1 McGill University in the Canadian city of Montreal with close to two million inhabi-
tants has approximately 30,000 students. Those who succeed in getting a place in
the Edison Residence cannot only count themselves lucky due to the proximity to the
inner-city campus: At the same time, they live in an inspiring environment which makes
it possible to experience the history of the location with state-of-the-art technologies.
Towards the street, the façade of the apartment building consists of concrete slabs into
which images were milled through an innovative production process. The images are
from the film Montreal Fire Department on Runners, the documentary about a fire
which had broken out nearby in 1901. With the embedding into the historic context, a
famous American inventor is being honoured at the same time: The reason being that
the film was produced in the studio of Thomas Edison, considered to be the founder of
the film industry with his inventions – and also the name giver of the building. The
images were represented in the concrete elements by vertical grooves. The grooves pro-
duce a play of shadow and light whose perception changes depending on the weather,
the distance and the perspective. Regarding its functions, the building is divided into
two parts: Behind the front building where the shared areas such as kitchen, lounge, liv-
ing room and bathrooms are situated, a long wing with 30 students’ rooms extends.
