tors combined with an automatic fire alarm system ensures early warning for users and
emergency services. One of the building’s strengths is its robustness and tectonic clarity:
exposed masonry and rough board-formed concrete inside and out, with very few drywall
installations or plastered walls.
Unobtrusively solved
However, this complicates any retrofitting of now safety-relevant elements requiring custom
solutions for the wiring of smoke detectors, emergency lighting, escape route signage, the Grundriss obere Ebene • Floor plan upper level
control system for the hold-open devices, and the emergency response system. The clever-
ly concealed cable routing above the built-in cabinets in the classrooms greatly facilitated
the installation of main routes for power and digital media. A new layer of suspended cei-
lings in sections of the corridors now houses emergency lighting and smoke detectors and
also improves acoustics. Among the many adjusted details are, for example, the sanitary
facilities adapted to the height of elementary school pupils. Parapets and railings also had Längsschnitt • Longitudinal section
to be slightly raised. More significant structural interventions resulted from the updated
room schedule: former workshop spaces were repurposed for music and art, administra-
tion areas and the teachers’ lounge were enlarged, new small group rooms were created,
and a movement room was added. Traces of these changes are as little visible as the PV
system on the roof (150 kW p), the retrofitted fall protection system, the updated lightning
protection, or the conversion to LEDs. Still to come: removal of all temporary solutions and
adapting the schoolyard to the needs of elementary school children. Querschnitt • Transversal section
