be dismantled and moved. The result was a standard-compliant single-field hall with
comparatively few interventions. The preservation of the existing building could only be
realized by developing an innovative supporting structure. A two-hinged frame made
of laminated timber is aligned with the axis grid of the existing reinforced-concrete
columns and transfers around 60 percent of the vertical and all horizontal loads into
the new foundations. Thanks to the innovative supporting structure, the existing foun-
dations could be preserved. The two-hinged frames are designed to optimize the use
of materials. They rest lightly on the concrete columns with a shadow gap, giving the Längsschnitt • Longitudinal section
hall space a sense of rhythm and creating an elegant effect. The large roof overhang in
front of the south façade creates a weather-protected terrace. The addition of the new
floor and the extension in a lightweight timber frame construction is made visible with
a ventilated wooden façade. The existing gable wall is extended to the south and two
opposing monopitch roofs are built over the new floor and the hall roof. In the north,
the continuous line between old and new is only separated by the new door of the
athletes’ entrance and a staircase. The floor battens were made of untreated, rough-
sawn 60/40-millimeter spruce standard profiles. Windows, ventilation outlets and the
maintenance doors for the ventilation system are hidden behind the continuous bat- Querschnitt • Transversal section
tens. Although the layers of time are clearly visible from the outside, Atelier Kaiser Shen
pursues a more differentiated strategy on the inside. The primary goal here is to create
a unified spatial impression. The ventilation system has been reduced to a necessary
minimum and largely designed as a visible installation. The metal structures for gates,
sports equipment and stage, as well as all technical installations, are painted black
and blend well into the background. The layering of the technical installations enables
easy maintenance and also becomes a design element.
