„Homeoffice, Wohnbereich, langer Esstisch – die einzelnen Bereiche gehen fließend
ineinander über und sind innerhalb der Halle ab sichtlich nicht fest verortet,“ so
Bernhardt. „So passt sich der Raum flexibel den unterschiedlichsten Lebenssitutionen
an, lässt sich alleine oder mit Besuchern, sogar für Parties oder Ausstellungen nutzen.“
Wie schon die Küche, ist auch die gelbe Arbeitsinsel nach den Plänen der Architekten
entstanden und trägt zur Zonierung der Fläche bei, die sich von Zeit zu Zeit für die
Präsentation der Produkte des Bauherren – BMX Fahrräder – sogar zum Showroom ver-
wandelt. Neu trale Großstrukturen, die von ihren Benutzern und Bewohnern weiterge-
dacht und flexibel (um-)genutzt werden können, gilt ein weiteres grundsätzliches
Interesse von BeL – und war beispielsweise auch Thema ihrer Installa tion NEUBAU auf
der Architektur biennale 2016 in Venedig.

Baukonstruktive Eingriffe

Zur Anpassung an heutige Energiestandards mussten beide Gebäudeteile nachgerüstet
werden. Um vor allem die historischen Backsteinwände des Torgebäudes sichtbar zu
lassen, wurden sowohl Halle als auch Torhaus mit viel Aufwand von innen gedämmt.
Die ehemalige Zufahrt ist heute großzügiger Eingangsbereich. • The access is now a generous entrance area. Hinzu kamen die Erneuerung der Dachkonstruktion inklusive neuer Dachdichtungen
und anstelle der blinden Oberlichtverglasung bringt gedämmtes Klarglas heute
Tageslicht in die Wohnhalle. Der größte Eingriff in den Baubestand des En sembles
schließlich stellte der Abriss eines baufälligen Jochs – des hinteren Sheddach-Segments
der Werkhalle – dar. In diesem Bereich galt der Denkmalschutz nicht, wodurch sich die
Möglichkeit ergab, einen Innen hof in den Gebäudekomplex einzufügen. Das Dach der
vormals zu allen vier Seiten ge mauerte Halle wurde also um einen der Holzträger ver-
kürzt und mit drei großen Glas schiebe türen geschlossen, die sich bei schönem Wetter
weit öffnen lassen und den Innenraum nach außen erweitern. In der Introvertiertheit
des Hinterhofs entsteht so ein lichter Freibereich mit Dusche, Außenküche und Wasser -
becken. Ge schützt vor den Blicken der Nachbarn ist mitten im urbanen Kontext ein Ort
zum Sonnenbaden, Spielen, Planschen und Grillen entstanden.
In den früheren Büros finden sich heute die Rückzugsorte. • The former offices are today places of retreat.
W ith their Bel Sozietät für Architektur planning office, Anne-Julchen Bernhardt
and Jörg Leeser have long made a name for themselves with their non-
dogmatic dealing with space and surfaces. Whether a glass penthouse on a sky
scraper from the seventies (see AIT 10.2016) or a small worker’s house in a post-war
settlement – their successful interventions in existing structures always respect the
history of a building and continue it in a careful manner. In the case of their most
recent residential project, they exposed the history of the material and the epoch of
an artist smithy in Cologne’s former workers’ district of Ehrenfeld. In the backyard of
a “Dreifensterhaus”, a building just three windows wide, they turned the protected
gate house and the shed behind it – where ornamental smith Carl Wyland used to
create his prizewinning works for architecture and sculpture – into a modern home
with a living area of 335 square metres, a place for living and working for a young
couple with a child.

Continuing what exists

“It is always exciting to deal with something that is already there”, Anne-Julchen
Bernhardt claims. “Just adding a new level to a building, not planning everything
from scratch – this also means stepping back as an architect and a designer and care-
fully continuing something given.” Not cleaning something up but, instead, planning
in the same context and thus even increasing the complexity of a structure, of a room:
This approach typical of the duo of architects is more relevant than ever in times of
a shortage of real estate and space in inner cities when everything which already
exists is being more intensely used and turned into housing space wherever possible.
And in the case of the renovated smithy built in 1902, this can be best seen in the
new kitchen – the former shower of the workers. Here all the layers of time are visible:
The existing light-blue tiles of the shower cubicle, originating, as the architects esti-
mate, from the 1950s, were cleaned; furthermore, the whitewashed brick walls, a
wrought-iron basement door and an added large-format aluminium window as well
as the specifically designed laminated kitchen custom-made by the carpenter create
a room of large narrative density. The colours of the built-in furniture – beige-grey for
the ceiling-high work- and cupboard unit, greenish grey for the freestanding cooking
island – together with the existing sky-blue tiles produce a homely, friendly triad. “The
colours which we newly add in the interior have to be a matter of course in the over-
all concept”, Anne-Julchen Bernhardt explains. “This means keeping up in harmony
