The Ippolito Fleitz Group highlights the role of unfathomable darkness. As part of an identity that is thankfully free of clearly defned limits. Like the unfathomed depths, personal perception should always harbour potential for new impressions. This is the key to conscious appraisal and discovery. The colour of the strapping cites the green from the South African fag, which in turn symbolises the unity of people of different origins and skin colours. The idea for this design came to me on a visit to the “Guga S‘Thebe” orphanage in Cape Town, where I was confronted with the wildness of wall paintings originating from the children’s lives and their impoverished social environment. What a compromise in design!
Just to make it look like a common chair…
Let’s see what it would look like if there were no compromised decisions!
To straighten out the curves between seat and back legs and eliminate the strange details at the back of the chair.
Hey, we might have to live with three legs! In that case it never can whip on the ground. The back is much lower this way, more like an office chair…
Looks sharp!
And you still can sit on it!
This form is also implicating new possibilities to combine the pieces.

Dress up your chair
Statement
The design of the Ono chair focuses on the typical situation in offices. The prolonged seated position leads to a reduction in body temperature – in response to which, the heating is generally turned up. The chair’s shawl moderates this ecologically questionable reaction by offering a pleasant, fashionable alternative. The shawl can be used like a blanket and wrapped round to cover the legs and body.

The clean, well-crafted and aesthetically pleasing form of the Ono chair raised the question for us of the essence of a chair – of the correlation of form and function, geometry and human anatomy. Group A
The ´Xhosa´ Charity Chair – reciprocity through design
Statement
GROUP A´s approach to designing the ONO Charity Chair bears great resemblance to our approach to designing in general. We search for integrated solutions that are practical as well as beautiful, solutions that cross the boundaries of scale.
We are an international studio for architecture with an open and exploring outlook; we work enthusiastically on a broad range of projects. Over the past thirteen years we have worked on offices and theatres, industrial buildings and housing projects, redevelopments and museums. Also, we work on projects of differing scale, comprising concept studies, strategies and urban plans, architecture, interiors and tailor-made product designs. We are convinced of the need to treat interior design, architecture and the surrounding urban landscape as mutually interactive parts of any design solution.
A chair never stands alone; it is part of a larger unity, surrounding a dining table or with other chairs and sofa´s, often facing inward. To strengthen this unity, and to emphasize the contrast between the ´inner circle´ and the ´outside world´,
GROUP A decided to give both the inside´ and the ´outside´ of the ONO charity chair a different appearance. We therefore decided to upholster parts of the chair with fabric. This will have the additional effect of strengthening the chairs´ tactile qualities, emphasising its ergonomic function.
In order to establish a relationship between the inner circle and the outside world, we will make perforations in the fabric – so we can make visible what is hidden underneath – , and we will make perforations in the chair itself – so we can show a side of the fabric that was not meant to be seen, i.e. the back. Where the perforations in the fabric and the chair coincide, the inner circle and the outside world connect, and a whole new pattern emerges.
The patterns we used for the perforations are inspired by patterns used in traditional Xhosa face painting. These patterns are still widely used in South Africa, including in the Langa Township. By using these patterns in our design, we feel we go one step further than just making a contribution to the lives of the people in the Langa Township. The people of the Langa Township themselves also contribute to the design of our Charity Chair by inspiring us with their rich cultural heritage.
In our approach, we seek to address the same values as the Guga S´Thebe cultural centre and AIDS orphanage, which use this rich cultural heritage to strengthen the residents´ self-esteem. We feel both these initiatives have a very positive effect on the lives of the citizens in the Langa Township, and we ourselves feel glad to be able to make a contribution.

Wiel Arets Architects
Statement
´Not wanting to alter the physical attributes of the chair- Wiel Arets Architects instead chose to modify the chair´s composition by dividing it in half. Upon halving the chair, its wooded interior composition is exposed, no longer concealed by a white layer of paint. By reassembling the chair into one cohesive piece from these two halves, a new chair was created that leaves minimal alterations to the external appearance- yet completely redefines its structure and meaning. The chair is therefore a statement on change and composition; attempting to bring a physical form to the notion that positive change can be brought to the world through the smallest of acts – regardless of the scale and scope of the changes being made.´

OYES Magritte in Urbicande
Statement
In stead of transforming the chair we decided to transform the context. The chair stays the way it is, we only create a new surrounding stimulating the fantasy of the observer. After studying various options the final choice was to upscale the chair a 1000 times and place it in Cape Town, the final destination of the Charity project.
The chair becomes a model of a building with a height of 760m, an urban icon for Cape Town. The transformation lies within our own fantasy. The mental change due to the overwhelming scale, entirely compensates the absence of physical changement of the chair itself . While the ONO chair can be used by a maximum of two people, the OYES chair with a surface of 800.000m² can host about 50.000 people. An extremely generous chair!! Four slim feet of 25x30m will touch Cape Town in the business district and the harbor. These four new locations will be connected through identical towers with a height of 460m. Each foot will intervene in the existing urban fabric, connecting people from different areas.
The 800.000m² building will act as a social housing icon. Inhabitants of the Langa township can move to the city centre. Compact apartments are created in the slim feet of 25x30m. The level of the seat at a height of 460m becomes an open space of 450x450m suitable for a public park and soccer fields overlooking the ocean. The back support of the chair will be filled with apartments until a height of 760m. In between there are shops, offices, sport facilities, cinema, bars, restaurants etc. The OYES chair becomes the iconic symbol of charity, the second tallest building of the world is the shelter of the homeless people of the townships. High-rise for the poor on the South point of the African continent with a view at the Atlantic ocean. A charity project with an impact on humanity.
Power to the people, the skyline used to be dominated by churches, than the financial institutions took over. The time has come that charity and humanity determine the skyline of the future metropolis.
Magritte in Urbicande is the subtitle of the extreme structure. The chair as shown on the carpet is not a chair. As Magritte would say ’……ceci n’est pas une chaise……’
So what is it? It is a model of the worlds second highest building. It is the urban chair which joins to the Table mountain. It is the structure connecting four open plots in Cape Town and thus creating a splendid green park at 460m height offering a stunning view at the surroundings of Cape Town. The OYES chair seems to be a building copied from the city of Urbicande where the marvelous cubic structure enables the city to function better than ever before. The structure emphasizes on human contacts and creates new relations. The OYES chair shows us a dream, a beautiful thought, a structure which seems outrageous but also refined, appealing and exciting.
If you are able to dream, able to share and able to get excited, buy this chair. You get the carpet for free!!

Are you comfortable?
Statement
This spiky chair doesn´t look very comfortable at first sight. However, one will not be hurt by it´s appearance. We are in a very comfortable position in Western Europe, yet we should not close our eyes for the horrible situation the people in South African townships live in.
It is utmost wrong people are driven away from their homes for the need of space for the World Championship football.
The chair can be used as any other chair, but it looks good in a more spacious room as well. It will certainly be food for discussion, bringing people together as a result. It will constantly remind the owner of the mixed feelings we should have: How can we live in luxury and at the same time not forget the poverty a large part of the world population lives in?
The strength of the inhabitants is symbolized by the rubber sticks, they will allways straighten after being bent. Hesitation to take a seat on this chair is good, it will encourage thinking of the less fortunate.
