T he new exhibition of the Diocesan Museum in Freising, which we developed
in collaboration with Christian Schmid as artistic director, presents Christian
art from two millennia. The concept of creating a daylight museum, developed by
Brückner & Brückner, significantly influences the exhibition spaces. Their idea of a
“Museum of Open Walls” was consistently incorporated in the exhibition design. In
close collaboration with curators Dr. Christoph Kürzeder and Christian Schmid, a tour Grundriss Untergeschoss 1 • Floor plan level -1
was designed along the life of Christ and his companions. Visitors are welcomed in
bright halls and intuitively guided through open walls, which create expansive views
and connections between interior and exterior. The striking architectural arches are
repeated in the interior design and the presentation of objects, giving the exhibits a
strong architectural reference. The pedestals of the steles are made from the same
Jura limestone as the floor, ensuring their grounded yet floating appearance. Thema-
tically, the rooms are immersed in monochromatic colour worlds, corresponding to
the artworks, their colours and historical context. Visitors are immersed deeper into
history and guided by intentional accentuation with lighting. The most significant
piece in the exhibition, the “Freisinger Lukasbild”, is placed in a central, dark blue
room, precisely aligned with James Turell’s artwork Chapel for Luke. Towards the
end, the rooms become brighter, and the ever-changing view of the town becomes an
artwork. Through close collaboration with all involved, a permanent exhibition was
created, allowing for new perspectives and experiences, merging architecture, interi-
or design, graphics and materials to offer visitors a holistic and harmonious building. Schnitt • Section
