I m Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro dreht sich alles um die Frage
nach der Zukunft. Passend zu diesem durchaus komplexen Thema ent-
stand ein eindrucksvoller Neu bau aus der Fe der von San tiago Calatrava.
Während das Museum von außen betrachtet ein für den Architekten cha-
rakteristischer, kleinteilig-skulptural anmutender Bau mit großer Geste ist,
wird der Innen raum von einfachen geometrischen For men und monoli-
thischen Raum strukturen bestimmt, die ab strakte Kuli ssen für konkrete
Aus stel lungs inhalte schaffen. Auf 12.600 Quadrat metern finden sich hier
ne ben dem obligatorischen Raumprogramm mit Gastronomie und Muse -
ums shop auch For schungs- und Archiv räume sowie ein großes Audito ri -
um. Enge Partnerschaften mit nationalen Univer si tä ten und an deren glo-
balen Wissen schafts einrichtungen machen das Museum zu einem Ort,
der Teil wissenschaftlicher Diskussionen sein kann und fundiertes Wissen
multimedial vermittelt. Grund lage des tatsächlichen Ausstellungs kon -
zepts bilden somit unterschiedliche, inter ak tive Prä sen tations sys teme
und markante Raum ins zenie run gen, die mithilfe des Mine ral werkstoffs
Corian von DuPont realisiert wurden. Der dreidimensional verformbare
Platten werkstoff ist nicht zuletzt wegen seiner durchgängigen Farbigkeit
leicht zu verarbeiten und erreicht durch eine fugenlose Verklebbarkeit
auch in großen Maßstäben gänzlich homogene Ober flächen. Speziell ent-
worfene Kubaturen konnten so im Zuge des Innenausbaus problemlos
und ohne störenden Detail reichtum umgesetzt werden. hs
Das mit Corian belegte „Ei“ ist Teil des medial bespielten Eintrittstunnels. • The “Egg” is part of a multimedia entrance tunnel.

Fugenlos: Der Ausstellungstisch scheint aus einem Guss zu sein. • Jointless: The exhibition table looks as if made from one piece. I n the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, everything is about the
future. Santiago Calatrava designed an impressive new building to
suit this quite complex theme. Whereas, seen from the outside, the
museum is a detailed-sculptural looking construction with a sweeping
gesture as it is typical of the architect, the interior is characterized by
simple geometrical forms and monolithic spatial structures which pro-
duce abstract backdrops for concrete exhibition contents. In addition to
the obligatory spatial programme with restaurants and a museum shop,
on 12,600 square metres one here also finds research- and archive
rooms as well as a large auditorium. Close partnerships with national
universities and global institutions of science make the museum a place
able to be a part of scientific discussions and to communicate profound
knowledge via multimedia. That is why the basis of the actual exhibition
concept consists of various, interactive presentation systems and striking
spatial installations produced with the solid-surface material Corian
from DuPont. Not least because they are dyed throughout, the panels
which can be moulded in three dimensions are easy to process and with
their jointless bonding ability also achieve completely homogeneous
surfaces on larger scales. For the interior construction, it has thus been
possible to produce specifically designed installations and to easily
implement them without any number of disturbing details.
