N iklas Fanelsa gehört zu einer neuen, kulturell und sozial engagierten Generation
junger Berliner Architekten. Die Kultur des Selbermachens liegt ihnen im Blut wie
kaum einer Architekten-Generation vorher, auch weil das Prinzip Selbstbau heute we-
sentlich stärker im Studium verankert ist als früher. Verbunden ist die „DesignBuild“-Phi-
losophie allerdings nicht nur mit einer sozialen Agenda, sondern auch mit einer eigenen
Ästhetik. Letztere schlägt sich vor allem in der Nutzung von Baumarktmaterialien wie
auch in der demonstrativen Zurschaustellung der konstruktiven Zusammenhänge nieder.
Der hier gezeigte Umbau einer 60 Quadratmeter großen Wohnung in der Stuttgarter
Straße in Berlin darf dafür als Musterbeispiel gelten. Um mehr Raum für das Wohnzim-
mer zu schaffen, ließ Fanelsa eine Wand entfernen und organisierte den Grundriss mit
eingestellten Sperrholzwänden neu. Das alte Schlaf- und Arbeitszimmer wurde aufgelöst
und beide Funktionen nun deutlich verkleinert in einem schmalen Raumstreifen unter-
gebracht. Durch eine Anhebung des Bodens konnte in diesem Bereich notwendiger Stau-
raum realisiert werden. Zudem entstand mit dem Umbau auch Platz für eine Abstellkam-
mer. Die vorgefundene Gipskarton-Trennwand zwischen Bad und Küche ersetzte Fanelsa
wiederum durch eine transluzente Konstruktion aus Polycarbonatplatten. Überzeugend
gelingt der Umbau, weil seine Spuren bewusst sichtbar geblieben sind.

N iklas Fanelsa belongs to a new, culturally and socially committed generation of
young Berlin architects. The culture of do-it-yourself is in their blood as hardly
any other generation of architects before them; this is also because the principle of
self-building is much more firmly anchored in their studies today than it was in the
past. However, the "DesignBuild" philosophy is not only linked to a social agenda but
also to its own aesthetics. The latter is reflected above all in the use of DIY store ma-
terials and in the conspicuous display of the constructive connections. The conversion
of a 60-square-meter apartment on Stuttgarter Strasse in Berlin shown here is a prime
example of this. To create more space for the living room, Fanelsa had one wall remo-
ved and reorganised the floor plan with installed plywood walls. The old bedroom and
study were removed, and both functions are now accommodated in a much smaller
space in a narrow strip of space. By raising the floor, it was possible to create the ne-
cessary storage space in this area. The conversion also created space for a storage
room. Fanelsa replaced the existing plasterboard partition wall between the bathroom
and kitchen with a translucent structure made of polycarbonate panels. The conversion
is convincing because its traces have deliberately remained visible.
