P rominent, zwischen Lissabons Altstadtvierteln Chiado, Bairro Alto
und Príncipe Real, liegt das heutige Weinhotel Palácio Ludovice.
Der Palast diente ehemals als Privatresidenz von Johann Friedrich Lud-
wig, dem deutschen Architekten des portugiesischen Königs Johann V.
Zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts errichtete er den einen Häuserblock um-
fassenden Komplex mit fünf Stockwerken von ungleicher Höhe und
Größe. Steingerahmte Fenster und Balkone, weiß-blau gekachelte
Wände (die typischen Azulejos), eine Kapelle mit freimaurerischen Sym-
bolen und hebräischen Inschriften, palastartige Räume mit Stuckdecken
und ein majestätisches Treppenhaus – dieser Palacio war der erste sei-
ner Art! Nach der Ludovice-Ära wurde das Gebäude zum Sitz der Polizei
umfunktioniert und beherbergte in jüngerer Zeit sogar das staatliche
Institut für Portwein – ein erstes Indiz für seine heutige Nutzung? Vor
Kurzem wurde der Palast schließlich von Miguel Câncio Martins in ein
luxuriöses Boutique-Hotel für Weinliebhaber umgebaut, mit 61 Zim-
mern und Suiten. Das Entwurfskonzept bedient sich dankbar der beste-
henden Historie des Gebäudes und setzt mithilfe von exquisiten und
individuell gestalteten Colortec-Teppichen von Ege Carpets luxuriöse
Akzente, die die Geschichten aus der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart
übertragen. Der weiche Premiumboden wurde aus vorgefärbter Wolle
nach den Entwürfen von Martins gefertigt – inspiriert von den Weinber-

Real. The palace once served as the private residence of João Federico
Ludovice (Johann Friedrich Ludwig), the German architect of Portu-

guese King John V. At the beginning of the 18 century, he built the
block of houses with five storeys of varying heights and sizes. Stone-
framed windows and balconies, white and blue tiled walls (Lisbon’s
typical azulejos), a chapel with Masonic symbols and Hebrew inscrip-
tions, palatial rooms with stucco ceilings and a majestic staircase.
This palacio was the first of its kind! After the Ludovice era, the buil-
ding was converted into the police headquarters and, more recently,
even housed the State Institute of Port Wine. Subsequently, the palace
was finally converted by Miguel Câncio Martins into a luxurious bou-
tique hotel for wine lovers, with 61 rooms and suites. The design con-
cept makes grateful use of the building’s history and, with the help of
exquisite and individually designed Colortec carpets by Ege Carpets,
adds luxurious highlights that bring the stories of the past into the pre-
sent. The soft premium flooring was made from pre-dyed wool accor-
ding to Martins’ designs – inspired by the vineyards and slopes of the
Douro, the place where Port wine originated.
