IN THESSALONIKI
139 countries, over 8,000 hotels and about 1.5 million
beds – so many that, theoretically, there would be room
for all the people in Munich: We are talking about Mar-
riott International. The American company – one could
almost speak of an institution in hotel history – has
been expanding its wide-ranging portfolio with a new
Autograph Collection Hotel in Thessaloniki.
T he Autograph Collection sets new standards in individuality for
the largest hotel provider in the world, Marriott International:
Each house is accompanied by a clear vision that reflects the spirit of
the place in terms of design. In inseparable unity with history, archi-
tecture, culture or social trends, rooms of every colour are therefore
created – and so that no one confuses the Tuscan villa with the stately
home in Dublin, each hotel is assigned its own number. Not a Number
Architects also succeeded in producing a staged parallel world in Thes-
saloniki: right in the centre of the historic city, they devote themselves
to the interior design of the new hotel of the Autograph Collection. As

experience of luxury and art created by local artisans further adds to
an exquisite stay.” The design language used by Not a Number Archi-
tects is clearly Byzantine – and if this was not already clear, then at the
latest since the foundation is based on the ruins of an old Byzantine
monastery, which were discovered during the initial construction
work. Inspired by the architectural treasures of the city, they let a new
old world emerge, made up of colours, materials and geometries of the
typical building style there. With its strictly symmetrical zoning, the
ground floor plan also resembles the structure of a temple. The uses
adapted to the theme are clearly recognizable: In the centre of the
“nave” is an inviting bar made of a dark and light combination of ma-
terials, perfectly put in the limelight by a majestic brass chandelier. The
sacred atmosphere is reinforced by the woven pattern of the stone
floor which extends from the covered piazza across the interior to the
secret garden in the back. Only the reception area – wrapped from floor
to ceiling in characteristic pale-red brick – and the restaurant, with light
terrazzo and real wood parquet, are equipped with a different floor co-
vering. An interplay of warm earthy colours with natural materials and
Byzantine shapes, literally taken to the extreme of the round arch, cha-
racterize the magic of the place. So, contrary to their name, the creative
