                                                                                     starting point for the project was the Goldene Rose inn,

                                                                                     sible to complement the prominently located hotel with
                                                                                     four adjacent buildings and refurbish it.



                                                                                     O   nce upon a time, the five architectural monuments in the central
                                                                                         Franconian district town housed different functions: while the Gol-
                                                                                     dene Rose has always accommodated travellers, its neighbours served
                                                                                     as inns, breweries, warehouses, cinema theatres, dance halls, casinos
                                                                                     and residential buildings. No wonder, because the former free imperial
                                                                                     city is an important tourist destination on the Romantic Road due to its
                                                                                     exceptionally well-preserved late-medieval townscape once even en-
                                                                                     joyed by Queen Victoria. The aim was to create an ensemble with a uni-
                                                                                     form habitus and flowing spatial transitions, taking into account the re-
                                                                                     spective building structures and the existing different storey levels. The
                                                                                     building cubatures, which were brought together by means of openings,
                                                                                     serve as a zoning aid for the newly inserted functions such as bar, lobby,
                                                                                     staff area, breakfast room and guest rooms. Immersed in beige and grey-

                                                                                     tity of the building structure with old guild signs, grainy plaster and dark
                                                                                     exposed timber framing. Projections and niches resulting from the exi-
                                                                                     sting building were converted into seating, especially in the lobby. Nu-
                                                                                     merous textiles, whitewashed oak floors and mirrored surfaces bring
                                                                                     brightness. Not only the bar counter and various ceiling beams in the re-
                                                                                     staurant area are mirrored, but so are also wall segments in the total of
                                                                                     43 guest rooms and 14 studios. A linear design language and industrial-
                                                                                     chic luminaires produce exciting contrasts, which are enhanced in the
                                                                                     rooms with sofa swings, cubic bathroom-furniture configurations and ta-
                                                                                     pestries that serve as a bed headboard and a rug at the same time, with
                                                                                     truly instagrammable spots. An unusual overnight accommodation op-
                                                                                     tion is the so-called “cinema suite”, a box suspended in the open space
                                                                                     of the former dance hall and current event room, which allows a unique
                                                                                     cinema experience through a panoramic window while comfortably
                                                                                     lying in bed. Things get truly spectacular on the roof of the five-star hotel,
                                                                                     where – hidden under an open roof construction – a ten-metres-long out-
                                                                                     door infinity pool with a view of the Gothic cathedral beckons which has
