GUEST HOUSE
IN INNICHEN
With the Atto Suites, pedevilla architects once again
prove that, even if only for a limited period of time,
space and especially living space have a lasting influ-
ence on our mental and physical well-being. Concentra-
ting on the essentials, a very special guesthouse was de-
signed in San Candido that subtly looks after the well-
being of its guests as well as that of the locals.
T he mountain village of San Candido enjoys great popularity as a
holiday destination, especially among its own compatriots. Our
summers are constantly getting hotter and drier, as is well known and
lamented by numerous people. Up here in Alta Pusteria, 1,200 metres
above sea level, in the far east corner of South Tyrol, the nights promise
to be cool and the mountain air fresh. This is how you can and should
feel in the seven flats – as if you were in a “hut” offering protection and
security, in front of which you are invited to step out early in the mor-
ning to enjoy a full breath of pure air with a view of the mighty peaks
of the Haunold mountain range which is up to almost 3,000 metres
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan high. With the Atto Suites, the hotelier and the architects alike are sen-
ding a deliberate signal to sustainable tourism. The guesthouse is plan-
ned and equipped in such a way that the flats could later be easily re-
purposed and made available to the local rental-housing market. In the
midst of the little market community, which looks back on a founding
history of more than 1,250 years, only a few steps away from the 13th-
century collegiate church, urban living and regional food are provided
to the most demanding tourists. The house is deeply connected to its
historic location, both as regards the concept and in terms of content.
The ground-floor restaurant opens consistently towards the southern
mountain range and the pedestrian zone. The directly adjoining rising
terrace sets the stage – for everyone, for a public that truly includes
everyone. The coloured insulating concrete façade is evidently inspired
by the Sesto brook stone. Since time immemorial, the Sesto stream has
brought this potential building material to San Candido – like a fine
weave, the stones are traces of the local building history. The careful
selection of materials is also reflected, for example, in the use of spruce
and stone-pine wood, cut by the manager of the Atto Suites himself. In
the farm-to-table concept, only what is largely grown and cultivated on
the farm itself is served on the table. Bishop Atto of Freising would be
pleased, as history takes its happy and respectful course with his foun-
