RESTAURANT & HOTEL
IN BERLIN
In the immediate vicinity of the Unter den Linden boule-
vard and only a few hundred metres from the Branden-
burg Gate, a restaurant and a hotel opened in autumn
that are already enjoying great popularity in the Berlin
scene. The successful combination of art, architecture
and culinary delights, as well as resounding names well
known in the city, have an extremely productive effect.
B arely opened, the Château Royal hotel can boast of being located
in a building according to plans by a recent Pritzker Prize winner.
Yet the hotel ensemble is primarily spread over two listed buildings that
date from 1850 and 1910. The associated new building and the roof ex-
tension, however, were indeed designed by David Chipperfield. But
what makes the hotel stand out are the interiors created by Irina Kro-
mayer – in collaboration with Swiss architect Etienne Descloux and in-
terior designer Katariina Minits – and the works by more than 100 ar-
tists. The objects – from paintings to light installations – are distributed
throughout the hotel and can be seen not only in the 93 rooms and
suites, but also in the Dóttir restaurant, the bar, the lobby, the fireplace
room and the conservatory. The interior design concept of the hotel re-
Grundriss Tower Suite • Floor plan Tower Suite fers to two epochs that had a special influence on the city of Berlin: the
Wilhelminian Period and the 1920s. On the one hand, this is reflected
in the artisan furniture, which was specially designed and produced.
Even the armchairs, sofas and poufs are not off-the-peg products but
commissioned works covered in mohair velvet, typical of the 1920s. The
ceiling lamps as well as the corridor- and façade lighting are individual
developments, which stylistically create a successful link to the past.
The goal was to provide guests with an authentic experience by using
the materials and the colours that traditionally stand for the city’s hey-
day. Guests are welcome to indulge in culinary delights in the Dóttir re-
staurant with its focus on casual fine dining, where vegetarian ingre-
dients play the main role. Culinary director Victoria Eliasdóttir (sister of
light artist Olafur Eliasson) is following up on earlier successes at the
same location: She had already opened her pop-up restaurant of the
same name in 2015 and was sorely missed in the scene during the re-
novation phase. Now, chef Elena Müller processes vegetables from the
region with a high degree of perfection and a lot of imagination. The re-
staurant rooms also have a Wilhelminian charm thanks to typical sto-
neware flooring, marble and herringbone parquet. The Grill Royal team
