MÜHLTALHOF
IN NEUFELDEN
AllesWirdGut renovated the interior of the Mühltalhof
in Neufelden, Upper Austria. In the restaurant dating
back to 1698, renovated in 2008 by Linz architect Klaus
Leitner, the skilful juxtaposition of existing buildings,
design, contemporary art and regional devotional ob-
jects creates an aha effect. The highlight: the flowing
spatial layout leads to a kitchen as the focal point.
P arty lovers are united by the unwritten consensus: every good
evening ends in the kitchen. “At the Mühltalhof, this is where it
starts,” is true for the gastronomic establishment that has repeatedly
won awards from the Austrian Falstaff Restaurant Guide. With 97 out
of 100 points, Philip Rachinger is considered one of the best chefs in
Upper Austria. Undoubtedly, the redesign of the Oi restaurant in the
Mühltalhof owes much to precisely this high level of culinary artistry
demonstrated by the hotel and restaurant, which is now in its sixth
generation. A 20-metre-long stone counter made of local chlorite
gneiss starts at the reception, runs through the rooms via the breakfast
buffet, bar and to the “Chef’s Tables” in the redesigned fireside room
and merges the areas of arriving, taking a seat and enjoying with each
other. Natural-coloured and black wood panelling interprets traditio-
nal elements and zones cosy lounging areas. The interplay with un-
usual details and creative design results in a dignified, high-quality at-
mosphere for art lovers, nature lovers and gourmets. The restaurant
areas with their differentiated design have been strengthened in their
individual quality and present a variety ranging from the Wirtshaus-
Stube to a fully glazed veranda to the fireplace room, the fine-dining
area. The latter affords charming views of the Große Mühl flowing
past as well as exciting insights into the futuristically elegant kitchen
workshop, which – delimited by the counter – has been staged as the
focal point of the room, including an open fire, glowing charcoal grill
and bread oven. Atmospherically subdued, with a coffered ceiling,
wall panelling, floor and chairs finished in black, the dining area
forms the backdrop for the staging set in front of it – and certainly vice
versa. In addition to reinterpreting the restaurant and kitchen areas of
the 44-bed hotel as a collage of individual, finely coordinated and
consistent spaces and situations, AllesWirdGut also expanded the
wellness area on the garden floor with formally reduced spaces that
are clearly oriented towards the garden and the hotel’s own riverside
