DESIGNHOTEL EMILU
IN STUTTGART
„Mutige Farben treffen auf Vintagemöbel Anyone who asked for aesthetic, affordable and central
overnight accommodation in Stuttgart often got a hel-
und Designklassiker.“ pless shrug of the shoulders from the local population as
Anja Pangerl, blocher partners an answer. This was a thorn in the side of investor Mi-
chael Bräutigam, and so he launched an unusual family
project. Since the opening of the privately run EmiLu
Hotel, Stuttgart finally has the ultimate hotel tip!
T he EmiLu Hotel is a true family project. This is already implied by
the name, which is composed of those of daughter Emilia and mo-
ther Petra Luise Bräutigam. Father Michael Fritz Bräutigam is immorta-
lised in the ground-floor breakfast restaurant called Fritz. blocher part-
ners originally won the façade competition initiated for the transforma-
tion of the functional architecture of the 1960s administration building,
and were then able to design the breakfast café, the hotel floors and the
wellness area in the basement in close consultation with the client and
studied architect Petra Bräutigam (see also AIT 11.2021, p. 11). The trans-
formation of the old building, which comprised the renovation and the
Bildunterschrift • englisch addition of two storeys, is a prime example of inner-city densification
and sustainable building: the existing building fabric was maintained,
the use of grey energy was reduced to the greatest possible extent and
the neighbourhood was enriched by a prominent square. The interior
design by Anja Pangerl and Vandana Sha also bears witness to planning
that has been thought through down to the last detail. Bold colours
meet curated vintage furniture, carefully collected by the client over the
years, and fine woods are combined with raw pre-existing concrete.
New windows reaching down to the floor afford unusual views of Stutt-
gart’s city centre. This distinctive style also characterises the 90 rooms
and suites, most of which have very individual designs: intense coral
red creates an energetic mood, while subtle, deep blue in another suite
conveys vibrant colourfulness. Of course, coworking spaces are also
part of this complex overall concept. The three meeting rooms on the
first floor can be rented and used for conferences and workshops. The
Lennarts rooftop lounge on the sixth floor is certainly the highlight of
the hotel: completely glazed on two sides, hotel guests can exclusively
enjoy the spectacular view over Stuttgart’s city centre while having a
drink. The location can also be booked for private events. The facilities
are rounded off by a boutique on the ground floor and the Gian Paolo
e Marco bar, which was designed by architect Iassen Markov (see also
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan Grundriss 4. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +4 p. 134). Absolutely recommendable!
