D er dänische Architekt Arne Jacobsen überließ nichts dem Zufall. Er
dachte in Gesamtkonzepten, entwarf Möbel, Türklinken, Leuchten,
Besteck, Aschenbecher, Edelstahlgeschirr, Wanduhren – und Armatu-
ren. Architektur, Innenarchitektur und Design waren für ihn eins. Ver-
wirklichen konnte er sich vor allem im 1960 eröffneten SAS Royal Hotel
in Kopenhagen, dem weltweit ersten Design-Hotel. Zahlreiche Produkt-
Entwürfe gingen später erfolgreich in Serie und entwickelten sich zu
Design-Klassikern. Die ersten Vola-Armaturen entwarf der Allrounder
1968 für das Projekt der Dänischen Nationalbank. Die Prototypen wur-
den seinerzeit in zwei Farben hergestellt – Orange und Grau. Das Grau
war der Tatsache geschuldet, dass Jacobsen seine ersten Armaturen
gerne in Beton hätte fertigen lassen. Bereits wenig später waren sämt-
liche Vola-Produkte in zehn Farben erhältlich. Es war die Zeit, in der die
Bäder Farbe bekannten! Sechs dieser Originalfarben sind noch heute
Bestandteil der 14 Vola-Farben, die jeweils glänzend oder matt erhält-
lich sind. Jüngst kam eine neue hinzu: Colour 28 – Matt Weiß. Der Lan-
cierung dieses neuen Farbtons gingen Monate intensiver Tests voraus,
um Farbton, Finish und Haltbarkeit einer genauen Prüfung zu unterzie-
hen. Die dänischen Armaturen-Spezialisten gehen davon aus, dass Co -
lour 28 – Matt Weiß neuen Gestaltungsspielraum eröffnen wird, da sich
diese neutrale Farbe gut mit anderen Materialien kombinieren und in
unterschiedlichste architektonische Kontexte einfügen lässt. wa

T he Danish architect Arne Jacobsen left nothing to chance. He fo-
cussed on overall concepts, designed furniture, door handles, lu-
minaires, cutlery, ashtrays, stainless-steel tableware, wall clocks – and
fittings as well. For him, architecture, interior design and design were
one and the same. He was above all given free rein in the SAS Royal
Hotel in Copenhagen opened in 1960, the first design hotel worldwide.
Numerous product designs were later successfully produced in series
and became design classics. The all-rounder designed the first Vola
fittings in 1968 for the project of the Danish National Bank. At the
time, the prototypes were made in two colours – orange and grey. The
grey was due to the fact that Jacobsen would have liked his first fit-
tings to be produced of concrete. Already shortly afterwards, all the
Vola products were available in ten colours. It was the time when
bathrooms showed their colours! To this day, six of these original co-
lours are among the 14 Vola colours which are available matt or shiny.
A new one was recently added: Colour 28 – Matt White. The launching
of this new shade was preceded by months of intense testing as to its
