F or many years, in Lauterach near Bregenz those attending the
1 municipal kindergarten have been benefiting from the architecture
typical of the region which is closely intertwined with traditional crafts-
manship and the material wood. In 1999, the representatives of the
Vorarlberg Bauschule Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller had
designed a kindergarten made of timber on the border of the

the municipality commissioned the architect Bernardo Bader – also
based in the Vorarlberg region – with planning a new building.
Preserving the alignment of the existing building, Bader expanded the
facility with a timber construction with a length of 65 metres and a
width of 20 metres. Interrupted by lower incisions, four sections can

12 between 15 months and four years find a multi-facetted space to come
into their own in the light-flooded rooms of the stringent building. The
short entrance corridors cross a glazed central hallway which becomes
a spacious movement area for everyone across the whole length of the
building. In the group rooms with a height of five metres, galleries pro-

the little ones first enter a loggia which serves as a weather-protected
area for romping outside before continuing on into the garden. Besides
a design of child-oriented rooms with architectural quality, sustainabil-
ity and a healthy room climate were requested. Installed as panels on
the ceiling, wood always ensures pleasant acoustics. And underneath
