Riege zu sam men.
Dies belegen zahlreiche firmen-
eigene Innovationen.
I n the middle of the 1990s, those with an affinity to design discovered what happens
when an experienced Black Forest specialist of sanitary ware and an extremely
talented, unconventional Paris designer join forces. In 1994, Duravit and Philippe
Starck presented Starck 1, a milestone in the history of the company and the bathroom.
The unlike duo with each his own strength succeeded in providing a new interpretati-
on of the bathroom. What was revolutionary about it was the return to archaic forms
of hygiene: buckets, tubs and washbowls. Today, about 20 years later, the skilfully
manufactured series is already considered a modern classic. Thanks to continuing
cooperation with renowned designers, Duravit AG became an international manufac-
turer of designer bathrooms. Apart from Philippe Starck, Matteo Thun, EOOS, Phönix
Design, sieger design and, since 2017, also Cecile Manz are among the creative minds
who launched successful bathroom series on the market together with the traditional
company. The “designer virus” was contributed in 1987 by Dieter Sieger when he deve-
loped the very first designer product for Duravit: the free-standing Giamo washstand.
“Making designer bathrooms tangible” is the claim of the meanwhile 200-year old
company. To achieve this, the Hornberg ceramics specialist banks three core compe- Bereits ein moderner Klassiker: Badserie Starck 1 von Philippe Starck aus dem Jahr 1994

ping this claim up-to-date, the product management operates closely networked with
internal and external development departments and with its team of designers.
Craftsmanship and high-tech, software-based simulation technologies and test series
with real models are today going hand in hand, also in the sector of bathroom furni-
ture and wellness technologies. This is proved by the company’s own numerous inno-
vations. Among these are, for instance, thin-wall DuraCeram ceramic, the HygieneGlaze
2.0 ceramic glaze, a true killer of germs, or c-bonded, a technology which allows to
connect ceramics and bathroom furniture with extremely precision, almost without
any joints. At Duravit, technology always has a comfort-giving function which benefits
the user and is by no means an end in itself. Light-, sound- and whirl system use digi-
tization wherever it makes sense. Design, however, always retains the upper hand as
regards form. Timeless modernity instead of short-lived trends as well as reduction
instead of opulence is part of the recipe for success. Since 2016, Duravit has been
cooperating with Franke as the strategic partner and minority shareholder to supply its
own series of fittings particularly in the project business, but sanitary ceramics and
designer bathrooms continue to be the core competences. During SIH, the 200-year
anniversary was suitably celebrated in the Alte Oper in March. We wish Duravit conti-
nuing success and look forward to future bathroom innovations from the Black Forest!
