L ondon ist um eine Attraktion reicher! Direkt an der U-Bahn-
Haltestelle Rood Lane, in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Themse und
Tower Bridge, ist auf dem jüngst fertiggestellten, 177 Meter hohen
Bürogebäude von Architekt Rafael Vinoly der höchste öffentliche Park
Lon dons ent standen. Wie eine gläserne Haube schließt der Sky Gar -
den das Hochhaus mit dem 35. bis 37. Stockwerk ab und bietet allen
Besu chern neben einer Aus sichtsplattform, Landschafts gärten und
Res tau rants einen einzigartigen Rund um-Blick auf die britische Metro -
pole. Den Nutzern des Bürohauses selbst soll der Himmels garten, der
auch als Eventlocation angemietet werden kann, zur Erholung dienen.
Seine inmitten von Grünanlagen gestalteten, urban wirkenden Plätze
bieten Raum für informelle Gespräche und kreativen Austausch.
Baulich steht ganz die eindrucksvoll gebogene Stahl-Glas-Konstruktion
im Vorder grund. Allein für den rund 1.000 Tonnen schweren Stahlrah-
men der Kon struktion fertigte die Josef Gartner GmbH 34 Baustahlbö-
gen mit einer Länge von bis zu 63 Metern an, die auf der Außenseite
mit integrierten Photo voltaikmodulen und innen mit Be leuch tungs vor -
rich tun gen ausgestattet sind. Hinzu kommen rund 4.500 Quadrat -
meter kalt gebogene Isolier glasscheiben, die Wind und Wetter drau-
ßen halten. Weitere Einbauten nehmen sich formell wie farblich stark
zurück und machen damit die Aussicht und die jeweils herrschende
Wetterlage zu maßgeblichen Faktoren des Raumeindrucks. hs

park has been opened on top of the recently completed, 177 metres high
office building designed by architect Rafael Vinoly. Like a glass hood, the
Sky Garden envelopes the high-rise from the 35th to the 37th floor and, in
addition to an observation platform, landscaped gardens and restaurants,
offers all the visitors a unique panoramic view of the British metropolis.
For the occupants of the office building itself, the garden in the sky, which
may also be rented as a location for events, can be enjoyed for relaxing.
Its urban “squares” designed in the midst of green areas provide settings
for informal talks and creative exchange. As to the architecture, the
impressively curved steel-glass construction is completely in the fore-
ground. For the steel frame of the construction alone – which weighs
about 1,000 tons – Josef Gartner GmbH produced 34 arches of structural
steel with a length of up to 63 metres. These are equipped with integrated
photovoltaic modules on the external side and, on the inside, with illu-
minating devices. Then there are also approximately 4,500 square metres
of cold-bent panes of insulated glass which serve to keep the wind and
the weather out. Further installations are very much in the background as
regards their form and their colour and thus make the view and the
respective reigning weather the essential factors of the spatial impression.
