I t’s just so elegant! – in Anbetracht des neuen Derwent Headquarters in London muss
man einfach ins Schwärmen geraten. Der Firmensitz ist lichtdurchflutet, wirkt luftig-
leicht und kommunikativ-offen, ist edel möbliert und präzise detailliert. Die sich auf die
britische Arts&Crafts-Bewegung berufenden Architekten Piercy&Company machten
augenscheinlich alles richtig, als sie für die Immobiliengesellschaft Derwent die ersten
drei Etagen eines Artdeco-Gebäudes im Londoner Stadtteil Mayfair um- und ausbauten.
Der Geist der 1930er-Jahre ist mehr denn je spürbar. Dank zahlreicher Fenster, einer
geringen Gebäudetiefe und dem vorherrschenden Farbton Weiß sind die Arbeitsplätze,
Bespre chungs- und Aufenthaltsräume taghell. Der radikalste Eingriff besteht im neuen
dreigeschossigen Atrium, das die vormals getrennten Etagen verbindet. Eine äußerst fili-
grane Treppe aus weißem Stahl und Holz erschließt die Ebenen. Großformatige Glas -
scheiben mit schmalen schwarzen Profilen gewähren beim Treppensteigen Ein blicke in
die beiderseits des Atriums angesiedelten „meeting and break-out spaces“ – Blick -
beziehungen en passant! Ausgesuchte britische und italienische Handwerks betriebe
setzten die Ideen der Architekten um. Für harmonische Kontraste sorgen warme und
kalte Materialien und Farbtöne. Zur reduzierten, erlesenen Materialpalette zählen tos-
kanischer Travertin, europäische Eiche, Leder, Bronze und Stahl.

I t’s just so elegant! – When looking at the new Derwent headquarters in London, one
simply has to rave. The company office is light-flooded, seems airy and light-weight
and communicative as well as open, is nobly furnished and precisely detailed. The
Piercy&Company architects who invoke the British Arts & Crafts Movement apparently
did everything right when they converted and extended for the Derwent real-estate com-
pany the first three storeys of an Art Deco building in the London district of Mayfair. The
spirit of the 1930s can be felt more than ever. Thanks to numerous windows, the small
depth of the building and the dominant colour of white, the workstations, meeting
rooms and lounges are as bright as day. The most radical intervention consists of the
new three-floor atrium which now links the formerly separated floors. Extremely filigree
stairs of white steel and wood lead up to the levels. While ascending the stairs, large-
format glass panes with narrow black profiles allow views into the meeting and break-
out spaces located on both sides of the atrium – visual connections en passant, as it
were! Select British and Italian craft enterprises implemented the ideas of the architects.
Contrasts are provided by warm and cold materials. Among the minimalist, exclusive
range of materials are Tuscan travertine, European oak, leather, bronze and steel.
