1 Fünf Baufelder, fünf verschiedene Vorgaben: Wohnen mit Aussicht, am Hof, im
Baumhain, mit Patio, mit Balkon – auf dem Bächtelen Areal in Wabern bei Bern ent -
stand ein vielfältiges Wohnangebot. Das Thema Wohnen mit Aussicht wurde von
Buchner Bründler Architekten aus Basel umgesetzt. Sie entwarfen mit dem Garden
Tower einen Turm, der seinen Bewohnern unbegrenzte Aussicht auf die um lie genden
Berge und die satte Natur bietet. Dabei wird er selbst zum landschaftlichen Objekt, durch
po ly gonale Brüstungsbügel, die sich geschossweise von oben he rab aus den jeweiligen,
allseits auskragenden Boden platten zu entwickeln scheinen und an Kon turen von Berg -
kämmen erinnern. Ein davor gespanntes, rautenförmiges Me tall netz sowie Pflanz tröge,
die direkt in die Balkonbodenplatten integriert sind, er mög lichen künftig eine vertikale,
schattenspendende Begrünung des Turms. Die Netz aus spa rungen über Brüs tungs höhe –
gerahmt durch die Metall bügel – wirken darin wie Fenster. In den Grund rissen wieder-
holt sich die polygonale Form gebung: Grundsätzlich sind sie offen gestaltet mit nur weni-
gen Kernzonen, die Bade zimmer, Stauraum und Schränke aufnehmen. Durch die umlau-
fende, raumhohe Verglasung so wie den ge schlif fenen Beton für Decken und Böden, der
die Materialität und Farbigkeit der äußeren Balkon platten aufgreift, scheinen sich Innen-
und Außenraum zu verbinden. Der Ausblick wird Teil des Innen raums, so- dass der

yard, in a grove of trees, with a patio, with a balcony – on the Bächtelen site, a mul-
tifaceted option for living was created. The theme of living with a view was implement-
ed by Buchner und Bründler Architekten from Basel. With the Garden Tower, they
designed a tower which offers its residents an uninterrupted view of the surrounding
mountains and lush nature. In the process, it becomes an element of the landscape
due to polygonal balustrade brackets which appear to develop from the top down with
each storey from the floor slabs projecting in all directions and remind of the contours
of mountain ridges. A diamond-shaped metallic net stretched in front of it and planting
boxes integrated right into the floor slabs of the balconies will in future make vertical,
shading greening of the tower possible. The incisions in the net above the height of the
balustrade – framed by the metal brackets – give the impression of being windows in
it. The polygonal design is repeated in the layouts: They are generally designed to be
open and have just a few core zones such as the bathroom, storage room and cup-
boards. Thanks to the encircling, ceiling-high glazing as well as the polished concrete
for ceilings and floors which continue the material and the colouring of the exterior
balcony slabs, the indoor and the outdoor space appear to merge.
