M-I-D CONCEPT STORE
IN OSAKA
Entwurf • Design Curiosity, JP-Tokio
von • by Annette Weckesser
„Shades of yellow“ – lebendig-frische gelbe Farb-
W ith around 50 million visitors per year, Hankyu Umeda Main Store is one of the
largest department stores in Japan. One reason for this is its excellent transport
links and location opposite Osaka Station. Established in 1929, this globally first “station
department store” was founded and originally operated by the local railway company.
Today, the shopping temple extends over 84,000 square metres and 15 floors. World-fa-
mous luxury fashion brands are represented here, as are Japan’s largest cosmetics depart-
ments, grocery stores and restaurants. Hankyu Umeda Main Store, renovated from 2005
to 2012 and then reopened, aims to offer customers not only an exquisite range of goods
but a world of shopping experience. A few months ago, “Maison m-i-d 1985” was opened
there. This new concept store of the m-i-d brand, like three previous ones, was designed
by Curiosity. The interdisciplinary studio conceived the latest shop as a “Light House”: the
unique feature is yellow translucent glass blocks, which are arranged in cubic or linear
form to create room dividers, displays, shelves and seating. Lively and fresh shades of
yellow set the tone and provide a stage for predominantly black and white garments. The
store is intended to be an eyecatcher in the luxury temple even from a distance. And it is
meant to be memorable for its clear colour and material vocabulary.
