UP THERE STORE
IN MELBOURNE
Streetwear in halls from the Wilhelminian era: With
their store extension for the Up There brand, Kennedy
Nolan succeeded in showing that dark basement spa-
ces can offer plenty of room for urban lifestyle. With
its bold colours, effective lighting and gastronomic offe-
rings, the store invites you to spend not just a few minu-
tes, but the whole afternoon in the Up There universe.
I n the centre of the central business district with its commercial
buildings, trendy clubs, bars and stores, the Up There brand found
space for its new flagship store in the basement of a Wilhelminian-
style building. The shop, which extends across the entire depth of the
building, is accessed via a covered external staircase that runs inside a
colonnade and leads directly to the basement. Despite the two-sided
window frontage, the store therefore has very little natural light, which
is why the commissioned store designers from Kennedy Nolan resorted
to bold colours, reflective surfaces and a wide variety of lighting ele-
ments. In doing so, the planners also met the client’s desire to create a
shopping landscape for lifestyle accessories, streetwear and sportswear
that would be “theatrical, cinematic, abstract, curated, expansive and
memorable in the sense of having a strong visual and experiential asso-
ciation with the brand. … Each element of the store has been considered
through a rich and enjoyable collaboration with a highly design-literate
client. “In our projects, we have always invoked the power of colour
(...) because we believe that places, experiences and emotions can be
strongly associated with certain colours,” says Kennedy Nolan’s team
about their work. The colour selection for Up There was based on the CI
colour green, which was complemented with rich orange and violet. The
ceiling and walls in dark green and grey alternate as to their material
between rough plaster structure and matte steel surfaces. The latter
diffusely reflect the coloured light of an elongated presentation table,
which, with its sometimes violet, sometimes green or blue light, not
only supports the cubature of the room, but also the colourful, futuristic
look of the store. The existing angled floor-plan structure helped to divi-
de the sales area into different themed areas such as clothing, jewellery,
shoes and sunglasses, while plenty of storage space was also produced
in hidden niches and wall cupboards. The café that is located at the rear
in front of the window frontage and has a large coffee table serves as
a hub for communication, collaboration and exclusive events, inviting
