been running a bakery on this site since the 1880s. Many interior elements have sur-
vived to this day – such as the beige wall panelling made of Lunel marble with the
black plinths and decorative strips made of Noir-de-Mazy stone in the large salesroom.
The chequered floor made of white Carrara and anthracite Petite-Saint-Anne marble,
the heavy oak counter and the chandelier consisting of coloured glass elements have
also survived the past decades unscathed. The same applies to the wooden wall panel-
ling in the two offices adjoining the salesroom. One of the rooms still has the original
floor made of flamed cement tiles in brown, yellow, and dark red, which are arranged
in striking geometric patterns. In the actual bakery, the large oven clad with enamel-
led, fireproof stones and wrought-iron doors and fittings has also been preserved.
A subtle interplay of attraction, seduction, and deception

The oven was in operation until 1998, up to the time when the bakery was closed!
Various uses and years of vacancy followed before Scherrer finally discovered the
historic shop for La Fille d´O. The architects from De Vylder Vinck Taillieu like to work
in existing building contexts. The result of their conversion is cautious and completely
reversible – but also absolutely radical! Using conventional lightweight construction
profiles, they created a skeletal structure that runs through all the rooms and creates
various display options – shelves, tables and rails. At the same time, parts of the
system serve as light rails. This is complemented with precisely positioned mirrors that
turn the perception of the rooms and the strict metal framework into a subtle and sen-
sual play of attraction, seduction, and deception. Grundriss • Floor plan
