A mberg Louis, Spitzname Pretty, stand Pate bei der Namensgebung des neuen jü disch-
amerikanischen Delis in Berlin. Pretty war kein Gourmet oder Fein schmecker, son-
dern Mitglied der jüdischen Mafia Kosher Nostra im New York der 1920er- Jahre und
bekannt dafür, seinen Feinden mit einer Gabel ins Gesicht zu stechen. Nicht die krimi-
nelle Energie der Ganoven, sondern der Zusammenhalt der Familie, das Streben nach
gleichen Zielen und der Stil haben das gastronomische Trio – Oskar Melzer und die Brüder
James und David Ardinast – inspiriert, ihre Lokale nach dem jüdischen Gangster der
Kosher Nostra zu benennen. Nach zahlreichen Restaurants in Frankfurt – unter anderem
dem Stanley Diamond, zu sehen in dieser Ausgabe auf der vorhergehenden Doppelseite –
bringt das jüngste Projekt die Kultur der koscheren Küche nun in die deutsche Haupt stadt
und bietet raffinierte Pastrami-Sandwiches und traditionelle Matzo Ball-Suppe an. Für das
Interieur war der Architekt und Produkdesigner Philipp Mainzer zuständig. In Anlehnung
an den Palm Springs-Modernismus sowie David Hockneys Gemälde „A Bigger Splash“
besticht der Raum mit seinem explosiven Farbkonzept: Wände in gebranntem Orange tref -
fen hier auf in Bazooka Pink gepolsterte Bänke und azurblaue Tische. Das Herz stück des
amerikanischen Diners, die Showküche, wird mit poliertem Stahltresen und den mit Teak -
beize behandelten Sitzstühlen clever inszeniert. Einfach, aber pretty, der Louis Pretty.

A mberg Louis, nickname Pretty, was the inspiration behind the name of the new
Jewish-American deli in Berlin. Pretty was not a gourmet or connoisseur but a
member of the Jewish mafia Kosher Nostra in New York in the 1920s and renowned
for stabbing a fork in the face of his adversaries. It was not the criminal energy of the
hoodlum but the clannishness of the family, the pursuit of the same aims and his
style, which inspired the gastronomic trio – Oskar Melzer and the brothers James and
David Ardinast – to name their restaurants after Jewish gangsters of the Kosher Nostra.
Following numerous restaurants in Frankfurt, among them the Stanley Diamond,
featured in this issue on the previous spread, the most recent project introduces
kosher cuisine to the German capital city, serving refined pastrami sandwiches and
traditional matzo ball soup. Architect and product designer Philipp Mainzer was in
charge of the interiors. Following the style of Palm Springs modernism as well as
David Hockney’s painting ‘A Bigger Splash’, the room impresses with an explosive
colour concept: walls in fired orange come upon bazooka pink upholstered benches
and azure blue tables. The centrepiece of the American diner, the show kitchen, is
smartly staged with a polished steel counter and chairs treated with teak stain.
Simple, but pretty, the Louis Pretty.
