A lmere, eine knappe halbe Autostunde östlich von Amsterdam gelegen, ist die jüngste
Stadt der Niederlande. Ihre Geschichte begann 1976 mit der Einweihung des Stadt -
teils Almere Haven. Seither wächst die Retortenstadt kontinuierlich und beherbergt heu te
mehr als 200.000 Einwohner – Tendenz weiter steigend! Entsprechend ihrem rasanten
Wachstum ist die Stadt natürlich immer wieder ge zwun gen, auch ihre Verwaltung auszu-
bauen. Es kamen allein in den letzten Jahren sechs neue Sitze im Stadtrat hinzu. Der
1986 – bei einer Einwoh nerzahl von 40.000 – errichtete Rats saal ge lang te damit endgültig
an seine Grenzen. Den Auftrag für die Neu gestaltung erhielt nun das bereits mehrfach mit
Umbauten im Haus betraute Archi tekturbüro Fokkema & Part ners aus Delft (siehe AIT
12.2015). An der grundlegenden Konzep tion des von Cees Dam entworfenen Stadthauses
mit dem verglasten und weit vorspringenden Ratssaal am Schnitt punkt zweier L-förmig
angeordneter Verwaltungsflügel än der ten die Archi tekten auch diesmal nichts. Vielmehr
klärten sie die vorgefundene Situation durch Rückbauten und neue, zeitgemäße Ober flä -
chen. So wurde einerseits der Besucher rang verkleinert, um Platz für die neuen Abge ord -
neten zu schaffen; zum anderen wurde das vorhandene mausgraue Inven tar durch helle
Holz möbel ersetzt. Der schallharte Stein boden wiederum erhielt ein textiles Make-over mit
einem von Scheublin & Lindeman gestalteten Teppich im Sitzungsrund als Blickfang.

A lmere, located east of Amsterdam, is the youngest city in the Netherlands. Its history
started in 1976 with the inauguration of the Almere Haven city district. Since then, the
new town has been continuously growing and today has more than 200,000 inhabitants!
Corresponding to its rapid growth, the city is of course forced again and again to expand
its administration. In recent years alone, six new representatives have thus been added to
the city council. The council hall built in 1986 – when the population was 40,000 – has
thus definitely reached its limits. The commission for the redesign was now given to the
Fokkema & Partners architectural office which has already repeatedly been in charge of
re fur bishments in the building. This time as well, the architects did not change anything
about the basic concept of the town hall designed by Cees Dam with the glazed and far
pro jecting council hall at the intersection of two administrative wings arranged in the
shape of an L. They cleared up the existing state by partial deconstructions and new, con-
temporary surfaces. Thus, on the one hand, the visitors’ gallery was reduced to create
room for the new representatives; on the other hand, the existing mouse-grey inventory
was replaced with bright wooden furniture. The reverberant floor in the council hall was
given a textile makeover with a central circular carpet designed by Scheublin & Lindeman.
