SUPERMARKT
IN MAILAND
Entwurf • Design Carlo Ratti Associati, IT-Turin
von • by Regina Schubert

I n line with the motto “Feeding the planet, energy for life”, Italy’s largest food
retailer Coop presented the supermarket of the future at the Milan Expo 215. In the
2,500 square-metres store, where one was able to shop quite normally during the
world exhibition, Coop tested its new selling concept. Two years later, this concept
has become everyday reality since the first supermarket of the new generation has
been opened in Milan. Instead of in endless aisles of shelves, here the products are
displayed on trapezoidal stands arranged in thematic groups. They remind of market
stalls and are to relieve supermarket shoppers of the feeling of crampedness. “Like
at a traditional market, the sales venue once again becomes a meeting place”, archi-
tect Carlo Ratti explains. In this way, the social aspect of daily shopping is emphasi-
zed. “By removing vertical barriers, we create a horizontal ambience which promotes
contacts and connections.” Large screens are mounted above each stand. Whenever
the consumer touches a product, graphically edited details about its ingredients,
₂
nutrition value, allergens, origin of the raw materials, CO balance and price are
shown. A kind of transparency which may well go too far for many international food
companies since it is still above all Coop’s own brand products about which this
information is disclosed.
