F ür eine junge urbane Käuferschicht hat UNStudio im Zentrum von Shanghai – ganz
in der Nähe des Jade-Buddha-Tempels – aufsehenerregend Einzelhandels-, Restau -
rant- und Büroflächen zu einem vertikalen Stadtzentrum auf ein andergestapelt. Der
achtgeschossige Koloss behauptet sich dank einer prägnanten, dreidimensionalen
Fassade gegen die oft mehrfach so hohe Umgebungsbebauung und zieht mit gezielten,
zweigeschossigen, bogenförmigen Öffnungen sowohl die Besucher als auch die Blicke
von außen ins Innere. Dort gruppieren sich Lifestyle-Handelsmarken und gastronomi-
sche Einheiten um ein Atrium, das vom zweiten Untergeschoss bis zur Skylight-Kunst -
installation im obersten Geschoss vertikal erlebbar ist und vielerlei Blickbezüge durch
sich überlagernde, abgerundete Plateaus über die Geschosse hinweg zulässt. Die lineare
Lattenstruktur, mit denen die Geschoss decken und die Balkone belegt sind, wirkt
gestaltprägend und verbindet die unter schiedlich sten Einzel handelsflächen optisch mit-
einander. Ausdrücklich gewünscht ist auch der Sichtkontakt von innen nach außen.
Transparente Fassadenelemente geben den Blick in die Umgebung frei, versorgen das
Innere mit natürlichem Tageslicht, dienen aber auch als große Display-Plattformen zur
Produktpräsentation. Als eine zeitgemäße Interpretation kleinteiliger Handelsstrukturen,
wie sie in Shanghai üblich sind, möchten die Planer ihren Entwurf verstanden wissen.

C reating quite a sensation in the middle of Shanghai and quite close to the Jade
Buddha Temple, UNStudio stacked retail stores, restaurants and offices into a
vertical city centre which attracts young urban professionals. Thanks to the striking,
three-dimensional façade, the colossal eight-storey building asserts itself against the,
in many cases, several times higher surrounding development and attracts visitors
as well as attention from the outside to the inside with well-placed, two-storey,
arched openings. Inside, lifestyle brands and gastronomic units are grouped around
a central void which can be experienced vertically from to second lower level all the
way up to the skylight art installation on the top floor. Across the levels, the void
allows all kinds of perspectives thanks to superimposed, rounded platforms. The lin-
ear slat structure which covers the storey ceilings and the balconies is a characteriz-
ing feature and visually links the various retail areas. Also explicitly wanted is the
visual contact between the inside and the outside. Transparent façade elements
allow a view of the surroundings, supply the interior with natural daylight but also
serve as large display platforms for product presentation. The planners want to have
their design understood as a modern interpretation of the small-segmented trade
structures typical of Shanghai.
