D er Ar chitekt Dink o P eracic beschrieb den vor seinem Umbau vorgefundenen
Marktplatz der kroatischen Küstenstadt Vodice als „urbanes Chaos“. In den 1970er-
Jahren wurde der Platz als eine für alle Bewohner öffentliche Fläche nahe dem Wasser
angelegt. Später in den 1990-er-Jahren wurde Priorität auf individuelle Interessen gesetzt
und Privathändler vereinnahmten den Marktplatz immer mehr für sich. Das Ergebnis war
eine überprivatisierte Fläche mit vielen kleinen unüberschaubaren Verkaufsläden. Der in
Split ansäs sige Ar chitekt Peracic wurden von der Stadt Vodice b eauftragt, den P latz
umzugestalten, um ein positives soziales Umfeld zu schaffen. Seine Antwort kam in Form
einer of fen g estalteten Ma rkthalle f ür den F isch- und L ebensmittel handel. Mit der
Kubatur des Dac hes knüpfte er an die städtebaulic he Typologie der unregelmäßigen
Satteldachformen an und sc haffte es so , den Blo ck har monisch zu vereinheitlichen.
Weiße V-förmige Betonstüt zen tr agen die auf fallende Hol zrahmen-Konstruktion der
Dachlandschaft, die ur sprünglich viel größer ang edacht war, jedo ch auf Wunsch der
Anwohner auf allen Seiten g ekürzt wurde. Der Bodenbelag der Markhalle breitet sich
über den Rand der überdachten Fläche aus und schafft eine neue Fußgängerzone. Dinko
Peracic ist es g elungen, den Mar ktplatz inmitten eine r b elebten touristischen Region
erfolg reich zu integrieren und zu einem Ort der Gemeinschaft zu machen.

T he architect Dinko Peracic described the mar ket place of the C roatian coastal
town of Vodice as it was before he converted it as “urban chaos”. The square was
developed in the 1970s near the sea as a public area for all the citizens. Later, in the
1990s, individual interests took priority and private traders more and more claimed
the market square for themselves. The result was an over-privatized area with numer-
ous small, confusing sales shops. The architect Peracic, a resident of Split, was com-
missioned by the town of Vodice to convert the square in order to design a positive
social environment. His solution had the form of an openly designed market hall for
selling fish and other foodstuff. With the cubage of the roof, he followed the urban-
development typology of the irregular saddle-roof shapes and thus succeeded in har-
moniously standardizing the blo ck. White, V-shaped concrete columns support the
striking wood-frame c onstruction of the r oofscape which, or iginally, had b een
planned to be much larger; the residents, however, wanted it to be shortened on all
sides. The floor covering of the market hall extends beyond edge of the covered area
and thus creates a new pedestrian zone. Dinko Peracic was successful in integrating
the market square in the midst of a li vely touristic district and in tur ning it into a
venue for the community.
