In Venedig ist die 16. Architektur-Biennale in vollem Gange. Abseits der Touristenströme
bietet die internationale Leistungsschau noch bis 25. November spannende Einblicke in
das aktuelle Architekturgeschehen. Von der AIT-Redaktion ein stimmig zum Favoriten ge -
kürt wurde der Beitrag des Vatikans, der in diesem Jahr erstmals dabei ist und Besucher
auf die Kloster insel San Giorgio Maggiore lockt. Zehn sinnlich schöne Kapellen zum Inne -
halten ließ der Heilige Stuhl von den Architekten Smiljan Radic (1) aus Chile, Ricardo
Flores und Eva Prats (2) aus Spanien, Eduardo Souto de Moura (3) aus Portugal, Javier
Corvalán (4) aus Paraguay, Francesco Cellini aus Italien, Andrew Berman aus den USA,
Norman Foster aus Groß britannien, Terunobu Fujimori aus Japan, Sean Godsell aus
1 Australien und Carla Juacaba aus Brasilien in der sonst nur schwer zugänglichen Park -
anlage hinter dem Kloster inmitten von Pinien errichten. Hinzu kommt ein ebenfalls
sakral anmutender Pavillon vom ortsansässigen Architektenduo Francesco Magnani und
Traudy Pelzel (5). Darin ausgestellt sind Zeichnungen und ein Modell der Waldkapelle,
die der schwedische Architekt Gunnar Asplund 1920 auf dem Waldfriedhof in Stockholm
errichtete. Sie war Inspiration für den Beitrag Vatican Chapels. Nach der Biennale sollen
die Bauten – in der ganzen Welt verteilt – weiterhin als Orte der Kontemplation dienen.

In Venice, the 16th Architecture Biennale is in full swing. Until 25th November, the interna-
tional exhibition will provide exciting insights in what is currently happening in architecture.
Unanimously chosen by the AIT editorial board as the favourite was the contribution by the
Vatican which, this year, participates for the first time and lures visitors to the monastery
island San Giorgio Maggiore. The Holy See had ten sensuously beautiful chapels for pausing
for thought built among pine trees in the park behind the monastery that is usually difficult
to access. The architects are Smiljan Radic (1) from Chile, Ricardo Flores and Eva Prats (2)
from Spain, Eduardo Souto de Moura (3) from Portugal, Javier Corvalán (4) from Paraguay,
Francesco Cellini from Italy, Andrew Berman from the USA, Norman Foster from Great
Britain, Terunobu Fujimori from Japan, Sean Godsell from Australia and Carla Juaçaba
from Brazil. There is also a likewise sacral-seeming pavilion by the local duo of architects
Francesco Magnani and Traudy Pelzel (5). Exhibited in it are drawings and a model of the
Woodland Chapel which the Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund designed in the forest
2 cemetery in Stockholm in 1920. It was the inspiration for the contribution “Vatican Chapels”.
After the Biennale, the constructions are to continue serving as places of contemplation.
