UMBAU EINES BALL- UND KINOSAALS IN MITTWEIDA VON RAUM UND BAU AUS DRESDEN

Teile der Brüstung im Lesesaal stammen noch aus der Nutzung als Ballsaal und als Kino und wurden restauriert. • Parts of the balustrade in the reading room date back to its use as a ballroom and cinema and have been restored.

Der 2018 von Raum und Bau aus Dresden gewonnene Wettbewerbsent-
wurf sah eigentlich den Erhalt von Fassade und Struktur des Gebäude-
ensembles aus der Gründerzeit vor. Die Substanz war allerdings so
mitgenommen, dass dies nur zu Teilen gelang. Das alte Mansarddach
musste durch ein neues ersetzt werden und lässt nun viel Licht in den
Lesesaal, der sich im Volumen an dem alten Ballsaal orientiert. Die
neue Stadtbibliothek stellt eine gelungene Intervention für die Innen-
stadt von Mittweida dar – wie Alexander Krippstädt berichtet.

The winning competition design by Raum und Bau from Dresden in
2018 actually envisaged the preservation of the façade and structure
of the building ensemble from the Wilhelminian era. However, the
fabric was so deteriorated that this was only partially successful.
The old mansard roof had to be replaced and now allows plenty of
light into the reading room, which is modelled on the old ballroom
in terms of volume. The new city library is a successful intervention
for the city centre of Mittweida – as Alexander Krippstädt reports.
