Z ugegeben, wir Innen-/Architekten heben gedanklich gerne mal ab – dem kreativen
Wesen ist es geschuldet. Im Alltag sind es aber oft die ganz konkreten Vorgaben und
Umstände, die letztendlich den Entwurf bestimmen: fünf Kinder zum Beispiel. So einfach
lässt sich auch die zunächst radikal anmutende Umwandlung eines 1950er-Jahre-
Häuschens in Stuttgart-Degerloch durch Holzerarchitekten erklären. Ursprünglich einein-
halbgeschossig mit weißem Putz und Walmdach versehen, ist das Wohnhaus nun drei-
geschossig mit Flach- beziehungsweise verstecktem Satteldach und rundum in eine
dunkle Klinkerfassade gehüllt. Ohne die zusätzliche Aufstockung hätten die Kinder nicht
genügend Platz gehabt – nun hat jedes sein eigenes Reich. Da sich durch das zusätzliche
Geschoss die Proportionen verändert haben, war ein Walmdach nicht mehr passend. Die
Grundrisskonturen jedoch blieben bestehen und die Fassade ist den verschiedenfarbigen
Klinkerfassaden der Umgebung entlehnt. Innen wurden nur wenige Bestands wände ent-
fernt, jedoch mit großer Wirkung. So verschmelzen Wohn-, Esszimmer und Küche entge-
gen der vorherigen Kleinteiligkeit zu einem Raum. Und trotzdem ist der Be stand noch
spürbar, durch den Stuck an der Decke, die übernommenen Fenster öff nung en und die
gleiche Positition der Treppe. Neu konzipiert, führt sie als eingestelltes Möbel bis ins
Dachgeschoss – in die Elternetage, die zusätzlich mit Sauna und Dachterrasse aufwartet.

A dmittedly, we as architects and interior designers like to give free rein to our imagi-
nation - it is due to our creative nature. In everyday life, however, it’s usually the
concrete specifications and circumstances that ultimately determine the design: five chil-
dren, for example. This easily explains the radical transformation of a small 1950s house
in Stuttgart-Degerloch by Holzerarchitekten. Originally consisting of one and a half storeys
with a white plaster finish and a hipped roof, the house is now three storeys high and
has a flat respectively hidden saddle roof and a dark clinker facade all around. Without
the additional storey, the children would not have had enough room - now each one of
them has its own space. Since the proportions have changed due to the additional storey,
a hipped roof was no longer suitable. However, the floor plan contours remained
unchanged and the façade makes reference to the differently coloured brick façades in
the surrounding area. Inside, only a few existing walls were removed, but with great
effect. Thus, the living room, dining room and kitchen merge into one in contrast to the
previous fragmented layout. And yet the original building structure is still noticeable, due
to the stucco on the ceiling, the maintained window openings and the unchanged posi-
tion of the stairs. With a new design as an inserted furniture, it leads up to the attic floor.
