T he recently completed Forum is the latest addition to the Campus of Sartorius AG
developed by the Hannover architects: The glass building combines laboratories,
conference- and training rooms, a restaurant as well as about 350 office workstations.
The lighting concept is part of the overall planning for the campus. For Sartorius AG,
transparent, light- and air-filled architecture is the expression of a lively and dynamic
company. The up to three metres wide and 5.80 metres high panes of the glazed dou-
ble façade are equipped with motor-controlled glass slats. Behind them, an accessible
and naturally ventilated intermediate space serves as a thermal buffer zone.
Pendelleuchten setzen Akzente in den Erholungszonen. • Pendant luminaires add accents.
From the surface to the line
Mehr indirektes als direktes Licht erhellt die Büros. • More indirect than direct light illuminates the offices. The metal panels of the internal façade level visible outside characterize the architec-
tural appearance of the building. The lighting planner referred to this by staging sur-
faces everywhere: With invisible light lines, the panels were illuminated on one side
with scattered light. Towards the top, the light intensity decreases which gives the
metal panels dynamism. Inside the building, the geometry staged on the external con-
struction is continued as a light line to serve orientation and structure. The heart of
the building is the atrium spanned by a glass roof. From here, the four levels are ac-
cessed. Analogous to the earlier completed office- and administration zones of the
complex, daylight-flooded, open rooms with team workstations have been planned in
the new Forum as well. The generous office spaces are structured by communication
rooms, just a few single offices, thinktanks, printer stations, tea kitchens and acousti-
cally shielded seating furniture. In favour of a calm, noise-damped work atmosphere,
ceiling sails are installed above the workstations whose effectiveness is increased by
additional room-acoustic interventions. Ample daylight penetrates the office spaces
through the multiply opened façade. In cooperation with an experienced manufactu-
rer of luminaires, the lighting planners of Studio DL developed a specific desk lamp
integrated in the office furniture. In a technically sophisticated way, it conceals its di-
rect source of light and illuminates the workstation exclusively with indirect light. The
luminaire is programmed in such a way that, in the course of the workday and adap-
ted to the human biorhythm and thus the wellbeing of the employees, it ensures a dy-
namic progression. With warm 2,700 Kelvin in the morning and cool 5,000 Kelvin at
midday and then again 2,700 Kelvin towards the evening, the colour temperature is
oriented on the natural daylight. The automatic dimming of the indirect light occurs
in the interaction with the respective current daylight levels. The workstation areas
are thus always illuminated with standard 500 Lux.
Der transparente Baukörper strahlt von innen heraus. • The transparent building shines from within. Comfortable and economic lighting atmosphere
To avoid the formation of islands of light and to produce a constantly comfortable
lighting atmosphere in the whole office space, the individual desk lamps are interlin-
ked: Whenever an individual workstation luminaire is manually activated, the
neighbouring one is automatically added in a strongly dimmed mode. Thanks to the
dimmed mode, the ambient lighting remains within an economically manageable
range. Selective accent lighting only exists in the company restaurant, by the way,
where ceiling-integrated spotlights and large pendant luminaires are to indicate the
recreation zone in contrast to the performance zone. The whole project is something
to be proud of for a variety of reasons: Due to the early and close cooperation of the
architects and the lighting planners, the consistent implementation of a lighting con-
cept integrated in the architecture has been a success. The architecture is not affected
by any kind of distraction due to visible luminaires or light spots. In fact, it is staged
by the specific light design. The thus resulting atmosphere in the meeting zones and
at the workstations is highly appreciated by the employees.
