BREAKERS SPORTS REHAB

IN VALENCIA

“Health is not everything, but without health everything is
nothing,” as Arthur Schopenhauer already stated. Similar
thoughts may also have prompted the Spanish professi-
onal football player Sergio Canales to initiate a sports-
medicine rehabilitation centre. With Breakers, Club
Studio have created a world that takes an all-encompas-
sing view of people in order to heal them.

A n abandoned commercial basement has been transformed into a
space dedicated to health and personal care, a space connecting
medicine and sport in an attractive architectural setting. Pablo Morán
and Carlota Hernández have conjured an oasis of calm and concen-
tration out of this disparate and geometrically complex raw existing
building. Both the intimacy of medical treatment and a wide range
of sports activities find suitable and flexible spaces here. The existing
static structure did not allow for any order. The Club Studio concept
therefore makes itself completely free and manages to create an inde-
pendent, superordinate spatial system. Added flexible room boxes give
the sports-medicine centre retreat options and form the strong back-
bone of the sports- and rehabilitation clinic, like a healthy spine. At the
same time, the spatial organism remains adaptable; light wooden fol-
ding elements provide the functionally necessary retreating- and sepa-
ration possibilities. When opened, the individual volumes expand and
connect to form a generous, flowing spatial continuum. Concentration
and inward focus go hand in hand here quite naturally with powerful
exercises done outside. It is not a new insight, but one that is still too
often underestimated: space and its inherent atmosphere have a direct
effect on the “patients” and, consequently, on a possible or even a
rather unlikely recovery process. The fact that both soul and body can
regenerate in these rooms, that rest and activity find their place at the
same time, is probably the most outstanding design achievement of the
Morán-Hernández duo. All materials are carefully selected, no detail is
left to chance, everything is coordinated. This creates an atmosphere of
security and confidence. The colours of the Breakers CI speak for them-
selves. Yellow for warmth and the sun. Green for the power of nature
and hope. Overall, there are only a few colour accents. The lime green
luminaires are custom-made and can be found in the reception, chan-
ging- and staff rooms. In these rooms for health, you may not necessa-
rily become a professional footballer, but at least you will be healthy
