provides a “leisure area” for the children’s well-being.
ARG studio
I nterdisciplinarity is the recipe for success: when it came to the
design concept for the paediatric ward, the interior designers of
ARG studio from Porto and the graphic designer Francisca Ramalho
worked hand in hand. Together, they designed the new ward and,
above all, the associated recreational area in such a way that the
children are able to relax as much as possible during their stay and
distract themselves from the therapy. This counts since some of them
have to stay in the clinic for longer periods of time. The inspired col-
laboration of the designers can be felt in every corner of the ward.
The graphic designer took over the strong colour concept in the rooms
for her illustrations and, from these, a main figure for the entire ward
took on a life of its own: a dragon. Consisting of many large, coloured
sheet metal triangles, it flies below the suspended, yellow acoustic
ceiling at the entrance. This is how it guides the patients into the
Grundriss • Floor plan interior of the ward. The dragon can also be found in all the pictures
and graphics on the corridor walls. Francisca Ramalho developed an
entire dragon journey – a path through visual landscapes with fanta-
stic plants and animals hidden within. On floor-to-ceiling, zigzag wall
panels, they amuse some and encourage others to ask questions and
contemplate. Behind the otherwise light-grey partition walls made of
wood composite, there are areas called Relax, Family, Games, Play,
Paint, Read and Study. There is something there for all needs, both in
communal spaces and in more private-looking retreats. Each room is
bathed in a different vibrant colour. Walls, acoustic ceilings, built-in
furniture and seating steps, right down to cushions and beanbags, are
all subordinate to the strict colour specifications. This creates homo-
geneity and an atmosphere of calm and security. But it also makes
people curious to wander from one room to the next and make use
of what is on offer – from the handicraft corner to the gaming zone.
It is an environment with a special quality of stay that will contribute
in the best possible way to the entertainment and recreation of the
