W ie eine Oase bietet das neue Maggie's Centre in Barcelona einen kommunika-
tiven und doch intimen Schutzraum für Menschen, die an Krebs erkrankt sind.
Das skulpturale Kálida Sant Pau Centre von Benedetta Tagliabue ist das erste Bera-
tungszentrum seiner Art auf dem europäischen Festland. Mit seiner einprägsamen
Formensprache fügt es sich harmonisch zwischen einer Krebsstation aus dem Jahr
2009 und dem modernistischen Hospital de Sant Pau ein, das von 1902 bis 1930 er-
baut wurde. Die floralen Keramikmosaiken des Jugendstil-Krankenhauses inspirierten
die organische Kubatur des Backsteinbaus mit glasierten Keramikeinschlüssen. In An-
lehnung an einen Gartenpavillon entstand in Collagen ein offener und doch geschütz-
ter Raum, in dem die Grenzen zwischen innen und außen verschmelzen. Um ein
zweigeschossiges Atrium mit einem Esstisch sind die Bibliothek und flexibel nutzbare
Räume angeordnet, die von Patricia Urquiola Studio gestaltet wurden. Die wohltu-
ende Atmosphäre lebt auch von den inszenierten Blickbeziehungen, die das Bera-
tungszentrum mit dem landschaftlichen Park und den darin platzierten Klinikpavil-
lons vernetzen. Benedetta Tagliabue gelang eine lebendige Symbiose von Alt und Neu
im denkmalgeschützten Ensemble von Lluis Domènech i Montaner, das seit 1997 zum
Weltkulturerbe zählt und heute neben einem Klinikneubau als Museum genutzt wird.

L ike an oasis, the new Maggie's Centre in Barcelona provides a communicative and
yet intimate protected space for people suffering from cancer. The sculptural Ká-
lida Sant Pau Centre by Benedetta Tagliabue is the first counselling centre of its kind
on the European continent. With its memorable design vocabulary, it blends in har-
moniously between a cancer ward dating from 2009 and the modernist Hospital de
Sant Pau, which was built between 1902 and 1930. The floral ceramic mosaics of the
art nouveau hospital inspired the organic cubature of the brick building with glazed
ceramic inlays. In the style of a garden pavilion, collages were used to create an open
yet protected space in which the boundaries between inside and outside merge. The
library and flexibly usable rooms, which were designed by Patricia Urquiola Studio,
are arranged around a two-storey atrium with a dining table. The soothing atmo-
sphere is also supported by the staged visual relationships that link the counselling
centre with the landscape park and the hospital pavilions placed in it. Benedetta Tag-
liabue succeeded in creating a lively symbiosis of old and new elements in the listed
ensemble of Lluis Domènech i Montaner, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage
Site since 1997 and is now used as a museum next to a new hospital building.
