CANCER RESEARCH
CENTRE IN HEIDELBERG
„Eine geschützte und warme Atmosphäre Already in 1972, Professor Erwin Heinle was in charge
of the new main building for the German Cancer Re-
ist notwendig für emotional stark search Centre. Since then, Heinle, Wischer und Partner
belastete Patienten.“ are associated with the Heidelberg institute and now
again contributed to the (constructional) advancement
Heinle, Wischer und Partner by being responsible for the latest research- and deve-
lopment centre in their usual well-balanced way.
F or all the construction projects of the Heidelberg Cancer Research
Centre, high functionality, the demands of complex scientific re-
search and the prestigious look of a building are in the focus. Yet in
the case of each building designed for the research campus, the archi-
tects of the office founded in Stuttgart just as equally consider the pro-
tected and warm atmosphere which is an absolute necessity for the
emotionally highly stressed patients – this also applied when it came
to the current new building. Plenty of daylight, transparency, bright co-
lours, easy access and orientation are the main features of the design.
The clear structure and architecture of the façade are consistent with
the series of its predecessors but is also specifically due to the dyna-
mic development in the sector of the research on radiology which is
conducted here: Prefabricated extra-large elements, some of which
can be opened, allow direct access to the large-scale and extremely
heavy equipment, which again and again has to be replaced, thus
characterizing the strict construction as it can be seen from the out-
side. Two large atriums divide the six-storey building which measures
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan an impressive total of more than 15,000 square metres so that daylight
is not only directed into the adjacent office- and treatment rooms but,
above all, illuminates the two lower levels. Through the main en-
trance on the narrow side, employees, visitors and patients enter the
spacious, light-flooded foyer and continue on to the treatment rooms
located in the back section. Also here in the entrance area is the visi-
ble centrepiece: A wide staircase with integrated seating steps which
leads all the way down to the second lower level ensures high quality
of stay in the research facility. Bright, coordinated colours of the wall
coverings, sitting areas and other furnishings as well as transparent
materials create an open space which visually prioritizes clarity and
calm. Wood panelling on the walls of the waiting areas complements
the concept of the interior design with a material which succeeds in
exuding warmth and well-being – which no doubt has high impor-
