L ow Tech und Low Budget prägen in sehr positiver Art und Weise die Büro- und Experi-
mentierflächen inklusive Ausstellungsbereich des Chinesischen Design- und Architek-
turbüros OnEarthStudio in der knapp 13-Millionen-Stadt Xi’an in der Provinz Shaanxi. Der
Bestandsbau ist in Stahlskelettbauweise errichtet und gliedert sich in zwei lange, schma-
le, nebeneinander liegende Volumen unterschiedlicher Höhe. Bei der Grundrissaufteilung
ließen sich die Planer von funktionalen Überlegungen leiten: Der Ausstellungsbereich
– im Erdgeschoss zur Straße hin – ist als Erweiterung des öffentlichen Raums konzipiert,
während sich die eher privaten Experimentier- und Büroräume im hinteren Teil und auf
der oberen Ebene befinden. Im Zuge des Umbaus kamen dort außerdem zwei weitere
Volumen hinzu – ein kleiner Besprechungsraum mit vorgelagerter Galerie und Blick in die
Halle sowie ein Arbeitsraum. Da das Budget beim Ausbau des eigenen Studios begrenzt
war, lag eine Low-Tech-Lösung nahe und so fiel die Wahl auf erschwingliche, alltägliche
Materialien wie Sperrholz, Backstein, Baustahl und schwarz lasierte Holzlatten. Auch die
Konstruktion sollte einfach und traditionell sein, weshalb sich die Architekten bei der
Bodenplatte der beiden neuen Volumen für ein Ziegelgewölbe mit H-förmigen Stahlträ-
gern und einer Betonfüllung entschieden. Die roh belassenen Betonwände und der ledig-
lich geschliffene Estrich unterstreichen den prägnanten Entwurfsgedanken.

L ow tech and low budget have had a very positive influence on the office- and expe-
rimentation areas, including the exhibition space, of the Chinese design- and archi-
tecture firm OnEarthStudio in the city of Xi’an, which has a population of just under 13
million and is located in Shaanxi Province. The existing building is constructed with a
steel skeleton and is divided into two long, narrow volumes of different heights next to
each other. The planners were guided by functional considerations for the floor plan:
the exhibition area – on the ground floor facing the street – is conceived as an extension
of the public space, while the more private experimental and office spaces are located
at the rear and on the upper level. In the course of the conversion, two further volumes
were added – a small meeting room with a gallery in front and a view into the hall, and
a workroom. As the budget for the extension of their own studio was limited, a low-tech
solution was the obvious choice, and so affordable, everyday materials such as plywood,
brick, structural steel and black-glazed wooden slats were selected. The construction was
also to be simple and traditional, which is why the architects opted for a brick vault with
H-shaped steel girders and concrete filling for the floor slab of the two new volumes. The
raw concrete walls and the simply sanded screed underline the striking design concept.
