E l Mànchester Català – katalanisches Manchester – hieß das graue, industriell gepräg-
te Stadtviertel El Poblenou in Barcelona lange Zeit im Volksmund. Das durch die
Industrialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert rasant gewachsene Quartier wird nun schon seit
einigen Jahren im Zuge des Entwicklungsprojekts 22@ zum neuen Technologiestandort
ausgebaut. Teil dieser Modernisierung ist auch die Transformation eines fünfstöckigen
Eisenwarengeschäfts zum offenen Coworking Space durch den Architekten und Stadtpla-
ner Daniel Mòdol. Den Bestandsbau mit innenliegender Stahlstruktur und katalanischem
Gewölbe aus den 1970er-Jahren ließ der ortsansässige Planer behutsam sanieren und
energetisch optimieren. Durch die Integration eines Innenhofs und einer neuen, energie-
effizienten Doppelfassade sind die natürliche Belichtung und Ventilation der einzelnen
Ebenen deutlich verbessert. Der inneren, großflächig verglasten Holzfassade ist nun ein
zweites, grasgrün lackiertes und bepflanztes Stahlraster vorgesetzt. Die dadurch entstan-
denen Galerien sorgen für eine großzügige Öffnung des Baukörpers zum Straßenraum
und erzeugen hybride Zwischenzonen – vor allem im vierten Stock, wo neue Terrassen
das Arbeiten unter freiem Himmel ermöglichen! Insbesondere mit Blick auf die drastische
Erwärmung spanischer Großstädte bietet dieser nach der Idee einer Gartenstadt realisier-
te Umbau inmitten des alten Industrieareals eine im doppelten Wortsinn grüne Oase.

E l Mànchester Català – Catalan Manchester – was the colloquial name for the grey,
industrially influenced district of El Poblenou in Barcelona for a long time. This
district, which grew rapidly during the industrialisation in the 19 century, has been
th
developed into a new technology hub as part of the 22@ development project for several
years. Part of this modernisation is the transformation of a five-storey hardware store into
an open coworking space by architect and urban planner Daniel Mòdol. The local plan-
ner carefully renovated and energetically optimised the existing building with an internal
steel structure and Catalan vaults from the 1970s. By integrating an inner courtyard and
a new, energy-efficient double façade, natural lighting and ventilation of the individual
levels have been significantly improved. A second, grass-green painted and planted steel
grid has been placed in front of the inner, large glazed wooden façade. The resulting gal-
leries create a generous opening of the building towards the street and generate hybrid
intermediate zones – especially on the fourth floor, where new terraces allow for outdoor
work! Especially with a view to the drastic warming of Spanish cities, this conversion,
implemented according to the idea of a garden city, in the middle of the old industrial
area offers a green oasis in the double sense of the word.
