RANDOM STUDIO
IN AMSTERDAM
„Wir konzentrieren uns auf Marken- Everything is connected to everything else. To touch
und Serviceerlebnisse, die ein Gefühl people sensually beyond virtuality, to bring the invisib-
le to the surface, is the vision of the creatives around
des Staunens auslösen.“ Daan Lucas, founder of Random Studio. They design
immersive worlds between art and nature for the major
Daan Lucas, Random Studio brands. Their own premises are also conceived as a
living being that feels and reacts to its environment.
C onnecting people, giving them space and place to do so, was
Daan Lucas’ very original passion and intention. At the turn of the
millennium, his dream had been to found a legendary nightclub like
Amsterdam’s Roxy, which burnt down in 1999. Today, he orchestrates a
legendary design studio with almost 50 employees. It can also be seen
as a kind of club where everyone is allowed and expected to feel comfor-
table in a very real and physical way. Random Studio’s home base was
thus intended to mirror the design philosophy they provide for others in
order to spark connections through real-world surroundings. The desi-
gners and artists X + L – Xander Vervoort and Leon van Boxtel – have
been friends and companions of Random Studio from the very beginning
and have once again brought Daan Lucas’ philosophy of life and work
into a very real spatial concept that can now be experienced by all the
senses. Like the original studio of the founding years, which responded
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan flexibly and directly to changing needs, the new premises also connect
with their real surroundings. Specific materials and surfaces enter into
a fascinating symbiotic relationship with artistic works. With his work
Second Sun, the artist Arnout Meijer brings the sky, its light and colours
and their fluid and constant change deep into the room. The result is
a magnificent interplay and interrelationship of different realities and
times, of inside and outside, of technology and nature, of material and
feeling, creating a concentrated but light-hearted working atmosphere.
The materialized space remains a reliable, clear and timeless constant.
The materials are chosen in a sensible way, they will age well and stand
for a sustainable design philosophy. For example, the partition walls in
the main room are made of pressed, recycled newsprint. Random Studio
understands the virtual world as the pulsating heart, the nervous system
that connects people to each other and to the respective room in a sen-
sitive way and creates proximity. Even the major luxury brands of this
world are taken off their pedestals. Closeness, humaneness, authenticity
and honesty come before alleged luxury. Because, as the saying goes:
Grundriss 1. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +1 beauty comes from within. Or from the new Random Studio premises.
