MIA DESIGN STUDIO
IN HO-CHI-MINH-CITY
nd
In the rich, popular 2 district of Ho Chi Minh City, the
metropolis of 9 million, the MIA Design Studio desig-
ned its own architectural office in 2020. The three-
floor office close to a park is an oasis of calm, has its
own enclosed garden and green façades. The themes
of minimization is shown inside in a clever office-, or-
ganization, material and lighting concept.
T he MIA Design Studio is an interdisciplinary, Vietnamese office
of architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture
founded in Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, back in 2003. The
creative office specializing in residential and hospitality projects has

ved the Vietnam Green Architecture Award. The combination of archi-
tecture and landscape, of inside and outside, the topics of daylight
and climate as well as the reduction to what is absolutely necessary
– all this is masterly made manifest in the company’s own architectu-
ral office completed in the year 2020. The three-storey, 400 square
metres large building is a reinforced-concrete skeleton construction
and has been designed as an open-plan office. The workstations are
arranged around an open staircase illuminated from above. The stair-
case is bordered by filigree, room-high shelf units for books, models
and materials. The vertical section of the building is interesting: The
two upper floors are enveloped by closed, massive façades. Starting
at desk height, an only 60 centimetres high, all-around band of wind-

crete supports, it is staggered outwards – a constructive sun- and
glare protection and, if you like, a horizontal, wraparound oriel. This
construction looks like an interpretation of Le Corbusier’s well known
Brises Soleil. It lets in sufficient light but protects against the tropical
sun of Vietnam. The firmly installed desks project towards the outside
via the vertical walls and thus enlarge the whole working surfaces.
The bands of windows visually enlarge the office premises since the
eyes are able to focus on the green outside. The upper, closed part of
the façade serves as a personal pin board. With its foyer, a meeting
room and a large dining area, the ground floor opens towards the of-
fice’s own enclosed garden, the “Field of idea”. This purist, calm
oasis, designed with young bamboo and river pebbles, is to have its
own effect: Whenever the glass tables and -benches are not used,
