BUSINESS INCUBATOR
IN KARLSRUHE
Like a shining white fortress of the creative indus-
try, the new FUX start-up centre embodies the spirit
of optimism on the site of the former slaughter-
house in Karlsruhe. Birk Heilmeyer and Frenzel Ar-
chitekten integrated the eye-catching reinforced
concrete framework into the conversion area,
which is being transformed into a creativity park.

A s a shelter for up-and-coming start-ups, the FUX Festigungs-
und Expansionszentrum provides exceptionally aesthetic yet
cost-effective rental space at the Alter Schlachthof creativity park.
With a ground-breaking participation process, Karlsruher Fächer
GmbH has transformed the industrial site into a booming centre
for professionals in the creative and cultural sectors since the
closure of the slaughterhouse. As the first large-scale new buil-
ding, the FUX start-up centre with four respectively six storeys
marks a new development stage in the progressing implementa-

towards Messplatz, a public square where major events take
place all year round. City-wide attractions such as funfairs and
circuses frame the public events of the FUX on the ground floor
with co-working areas and a cafeteria. Selective, spatial expansi-
ons and breakthroughs interconnect the communication areas
across the levels for process-like appropriation. The offset of the
cubature on the upper floors enriches the seminar area on the
4th floor with a roof terrace affording a panoramic view of the

cilities, the FUX is conceived to offer a broad spectrum of ser-
vices on 3,800 square metres of flexible floor space. The robust
architectural structure with a grid of 3.75 metres offers maximum
flexibility for mixing room sizes and is open to a wide range of
changes in use. The industrial character of the interior is empha-
sised by the raw reinforced concrete surfaces, the use of semi-fi-
nished products and visible installations. Few, deliberately posi-
tioned furniture accents with clear colours form a contrasting
counterpart to the unpretentious shell with its loft character.
With the motto "as little as possible, as much as necessary", the
ambitious budget targets could be met and yet, a interesting cul-
