IN MOSCOW
Luxury is nothing new in Moscow. But for transforming
the old charm of the Russian capital into modern li-
ving, it takes a lot of feeling for contemporary aesthe-
tics and different materials. Gifted with just this, archi-
tect Alexander Volkov designed the office of a property
developer so that the clients probably want the same
design for their own homes.
I n the east of the Russian city of millions, a new district has been
developed over the course of the past years: the Artkvartal. It is
here that a project is being implemented which, in addition to living
space, is to above all provide a modern platform for art. Located right
at the bank of the River Yausa, close to the centre as well as to the
Kremlin, the NV/9-Artkvartal is an apartment complex consisting of
two buildings and has living units of different dimensions. In the pent-
house, which offers a spectacular view of the Russian capital, a pre-
stigious office and showroom was designed for the property developer
who is charge. As the commissioned architect, Volkov had to master

and with a gable ceiling in such a way that it is preserved in its di-
mension and accommodates workstations, meeting rooms as well as
storage room. This was achieved by dividing the room into zones
which are assigned their functions by installations. Two brass-panel-
led boxes are standing parallel to each other in the open room and
7 divide it into a cosy waiting area, workstations and a meeting room.
rooms such as a tea kitchen and the sanitary facilities are in the se-
cond one. Between those two rigid boxes is the meeting room. A five

vered with curtains structure the rooms arranged around the installa-
tions. In the entrance area stands the client’s favourite object: a scale-

luminated stage with the custom-made table and a luminaire with 25
lightbulbs designed by the architect. Materials such as brass and vel-
vet as well as the furniture and finely coordinated art objects create
